JUST PLEASE

It was a tiring morning for Mark as he just got off from the graveyard shift. He had a tough week at the hospital covering for several nurses that were absent. He was supposed to be on duty again by three in the afternoon but he begged for time off to surprise his boyfriend. Mark usually covered for graveyard shifts so by the time he got home, his boyfriend Jeffrey would be at work. By afternoon, Jeffrey would be tired from the office and traffic further eating the little time Mark had with him.

After several days of being away from him, Mark was excited to have a simple afternoon helping Jeffrey 'relax' followed by a romantic dinner and hopefully rekindle their love life. He thought of his auburn-haired boyfriend and his hands ached to touch Jeffrey's petite body.

It was a tough time for Mark. Being a newly licensed nurse, he had to work hard to fit in his new hospital. This meant becoming a reliever and covering for absent nurses. Sometimes he'd have only eight hours of rest before being called again and it put a significant strain on his four-year relationship with Jeffrey.

During his review to take the licensing exam, Mark started to feel Jeffrey becoming distant and this worried him. A month into his work in the hospital, he felt Jeffrey pulling away more. He never wanted to push Jeffrey away so, today, he faced his supervisor and put his foot down. Mark was only required 40 hours of work a week and he was going to enjoy his off-days with his one true love.

He strolled out of the supermarket with his purchases for the special evening and into the mall to buy a couple of DVDs. Face screwed in concentration, he mentally ticked his checklist and wondered if he forgot something. Lubes... check... condoms... check... handcuffs

Just then a familiar laugh broke his mullings and he grinned in happiness.

Jeffrey!

Mark spun around and found his boyfriend in the mall. He didn't even think it strange that it was ten in the morning on a weekday which meant Jeffrey was supposed to be at work. Mark's love for his boyfriend blotted out every suspicious thought in his head.

The same love trembled to breakpoint when Mark finally had a full view of Jeffrey clinging on the arm of a suave looking man dressed in an expensive three-piece suit.

What the hell? Who is that guy? Mark thought angrily. He was never the jealous type and he trusted Jeffrey. After all, Mark was considered a 'catch' as he was the Rugby star player in high school and college and Jeffrey was the odd one of the class. Standing at a muscular six foot seven with a chiseled face, wavy black hair and green eyes, a lot of people wondered why he chose Jeffrey. It was love in college but now Mark's heartbeat faltered at what he saw. Still, he took deep breaths to calm himself and walked slowly towards his boyfriend and his companion. He was still hidden from their view by a couple of garish food stands when he saw that Jeffrey was talking to a few other people. Mark identified them as his college gang. There was Adam, Rook, Dean and his girlfriend Kayla. This made Mark sigh in relief, Jeffrey wouldn't dare cheat on Mark in front of Mark's friends.

Would he?

Mark hadn't seen his gang after graduation but he still considered them as close friends. From the looks on their faces, they were chatting happily. Still, something made Mark cautious so he approached them slowly, taking care to stay hidden until he got into hearing range.

"So Jeffrey, how are you now?" Rook's deep baritone voice carried over to where Mark stood, hidden behind a standing tarpaulin poster.

Jeffrey giggled. "I'm doing great, my relationship is as strong as ever!"

Mark's chest filled with hope at what Jeffrey said. He didn't need any more convincing and was about to step out of his hiding when Dean's question stalled him. "So have you seen Mark lately?"

"Oh, he got called for a graveyard shift again." Jeffrey sighed. "I swear being roommates with him is tough."

Roommates? Mark was puzzled.

Adam butted in Mark's thoughts of mounting paranoia. "Sad to know you and Mark broke up and all. I haven't talked to him recently so I didn't know that."

"Don't be," Jeffrey said with inflated bravado. "He's happy with his career surrounded by his 'fellow' nurses." He made double quotation marks in the air.

Kayla chortled "Figured Mark would be happy being surrounded by hot nurses. Oh sorry, Jeffrey." She added lamely.

What?! Mark shook in mute anger. Jeffrey made it sound like he cheated on him.

The guys made disapproving noises to defend Mark but they looked slightly convinced at Kayla's barb. She didn't really like Mark after she got dumped by him during high school. Mark only felt brotherly affection towards her but he wasn't feeling brotherly towards her now.

"I still can't believe it." Adam was shaking his head. Dean and Rook reluctantly agreed.

Yes Adam tell them! Mark mentally shouted in triumph.

Adam continued, "I know he had a couple of girlfriends in high school-"

"Oh please, he was a player Adam." Kayla interrupted Adam and shot Jeffrey a sympathetic look. She never really got over Mark refusing her advances from high school to college. And she doesn't even really like Jeffrey. After all, she made rumors about Mark being gay in Senior year. It was those rumors that paved the way for Mark and Jeffrey to meet.

The man beside Jeffrey cleared his throat. "I think that's enough reminiscing. Today is a special day after all."

Just when Mark's heart couldn't possibly get hurt anymore Jeffrey gave the coup de grace. "It's our first anniversary!" Jeffrey squeaked happily to the air. "Right Thomas?"

"Yes love," Thomas smiled at Jeffrey. "We're on our way to celebrate how about you join us for lunch?"

There were mixed murmurs of yes and nos. Mark was still rooted in his hiding spot. His eyes glazed a long time ago with unshed tears leaving only blurred figures and shifting colors. He wanted to march there and do something. He needed to shout his rage. But Mark was a gentle giant.

A shuffling of feet bumped Mark out of his dazed misery. They were headed to where he was hiding! Spinning around he grabbed the first arm he could see.

It so happened, walking by was a five-foot eleven man with a 230-pound frame, shocked at another hulking man with an iron grip on one of his arms. Jason was no weakling. He was a wrestler and he was about to damage at the intruder who yanked him. Jason was about to scream to let him go but something in the man's eyes made him stop.

"Just please... " Mark pleaded to Jason in a tear-soaked voice. "Please pretend..."

Jason could see the anguish in Mark's eyes and felt the trembling on his arm. He saw Mark cast furtive glances behind him and Jason understood. He entwined his fingers in Mark's. Jason was straight but he saw a man vainly holding on to a shred of dignity.

Jason got close enough and whispered, "Here they come." Mark nodded but couldn't stop his eyes from watering. Jason had to take action so he quickly grabbed Mark's collar and smashed his lips against his.

Mark was so shocked that the stranger was kissing him that it dried his watering eyes quickly. Then he felt anger boil up. He still felt committed to Jeffrey. It was followed by awe when he finally saw who kissed him. Mark saw a young man, definitely younger than him that was bigger than him albeit shorter. The man had blond hair gelled to a point, blue eyes and a strong jaw.

Jason grimaced inside at what he did after breaking the kiss. He was straight! But there was something about the man who grabbed him. Jason just broke up with his cheating girlfriend several days ago and all he wanted was to help this man who may be experiencing the same thing.

A chorus of gasps broke into Mark and Jason's thoughts and they both turned to face the source of the sounds. Fingers still entwined to a strong grip.

A small wavering smile was pasted on Mark's face while Jason was smug. Jason felt accomplished that he helped someone get back at a cheater like his ex-girlfriend. Judging from the greenish hue of the face of the auburn-haired twink hanging on to the arm of some rich guy, he guessed correctly Mark's soon to be ex-boyfriend.

Rook finally broke free from the surprise. "Hey, Mark long time, no see!" He was still staring curiously at Jason.

"Guys! I didn't notice you there." Mark reply with only a slight tremble in his voice. "Umm..." Mark looked down at his left hand still in Jason's.

Jason felt the uncertainty. He didn't pretend this much only to be caught. Besides, for some reason, he wanted to see a cheater, the auburn-haired twink weep.

Jason started to introduce himself in a jolly tone. "Hi, I'm Jason," remembering Rook calling the name of the man beside him, Jason continued, "Mark's boyfriend." Jason had the satisfaction of seeing the face of the cheater pale and sweat.

"I'd shake your hands but, "Jason lifted his right hand encased in Mark's and gesturing to it. "I'm preoccupied as of the moment."

Mark tried to hide his shock that a stranger was pretending this much for him. Jason, that was his name. He was washing away Mark's pain with a mix of satisfaction at exacting revenge at Jeffrey and happiness and a whole bevy of positive emotions.

He wasn't really into muscled men like Jason because he preferred petite men with female-like attributes such as Jeffrey. Still, he didn't want to embarrass Jason. Plus he was liking getting vengeance against his two-timing ex. First anniversary indeed! He plastered a big grin on his face and Jeffrey flinched with jealousy. The bastard was even eyeing Jason with unbridled interest!

"I'd love to stay and chat to get to know you guys but, " Jason shrugged apologetically, "Mark and I are off to celebrate our anniversary!"

"You look kind of young... "Dean trailed off casting a questioning glance at Jason.

"Um, I'm still in high school." Jason felt Mark's panicked gaze on him and quickly explained. "Senior student but I'm 19 years old. Got held back a year." Now that Jason noticed, Mark was older but he didn't know by how much. Two to three years perhaps- ugh maybe more. Mark though, breathed a sigh of relief. He thought had had just molested a minor.

"How-" Jeffrey's voice broke and he quickly coughed. "How did you two meet?"

Mark was feeling frantic again. This was a spur of the moment thing. Jason only smiled mischievously and Mark relaxed as the teenager proceeded to spin an embellished tale on how they met.

"Well, I just broke up with my girlfriend after I lost in a regional match. She didn't like to date losers so she cheated on me. At least that was her reason." Jason shrugged, feeling a bit of pain remembering. "Then I met this big lug and he grabbed my hand, kissed and fell in love." Technically, all of it was true.

"Anniversary... so a year ago also... " Kayla said it as a statement, not a question. "Well, what a surprise. You hooked up a year ago when Mark also got dumped. Are you sure you aren't a rebound kid?" Kayla was full-on sneering at the end of her sentence.

This annoyed Mark. He'll never know the extent of Kayla's bitterness at being rejected. He was contemplating putting her in her place when luckily Adam broke the tension. "C'mon Kay, they've been together for a year now. If Jason was just a rebound or vice versa, they wouldn't last this long. "

Sighing inwardly with relief, Mark focused a stare at Jeffrey. The look on his face spoke volumes. Only Jeffrey knew the truth. Mark conveyed silently that this was a ruse. He felt satisfied as Jeffrey fidgeted and looked down on the floor, guilt marring his face.

Jason shifted beside Mark and glanced at his watch. "Hey look at the time. I have a whole day planned for the two of us. If you don't mind, my bubs and I have to go."

"Bubs?" Adam and the guys snickered.

"Ooh, you are whipped man." Rook heckled Mark. "You got nicknames already. I name my cat BUBS!"

"Shut up Dean." Mark rolled his eyes and allowed himself to be pulled away by Jason leaving behind Jeffrey. This time it was his eyes that were filling up with unshed tears, the man beside him just stared at Jason and Mark the whole time in a pensive look. In the background was Dean berating Kayla for being an insensitive bitch.

Jason and Mark rounded several corners until Jason finally stopped. He still hadn't let go of Mark's and started talking with his back towards Mark. "You know what man... I'm straight."

"I know... " Mark trailed his voice. "Sorry about this..." but he still didn't let go of Jason's hand.

"Just please," Jason turned around to look at Mark squarely and whispered. "Don't let go." Jason was willing to give this relationship a shot.

Mark grinned at Jason and softly kissed his lips. "I won't."

End.
