Should AVG slow my computer?

I ditched Norton a while back and got AVG. Since then my computer has gotten slow every time I go online. It gets slower and slower the longer I'm on, to the point I've started rebooting every couple of hours.

Should AVG be doing this? If it is, is there a way to deal with it?

I have not had this problem with AVG, it seems to work faster than other antivirus programs for me. Norton is usually the slowest.

a free program that does a good job finding malware that slows you down.

Norton's often includes a number of applications, not just the main anti-virus component, depending on which version you have. Check your running processes to confirm there are no Norton's components lurking around.

If editing the registry doesn't scare you to death you can wipe out the rest of the Norton elements there.

Check the options if you set anything wrong. AVG also installs an add-on in Firefox.

If you mean via Task Manager, I don't see any Norton sutff running. I did see a whole string of things with the name in my last post, though.

^^There are hidden components of Norton still hanging about in your PC's registry. You can't see them, but AVG can and this causes conflicts that steal clock cycles from your CPU and cause your PC to eventually slow to a crawl.

There are programs available for free online that remove these hidden remnants.

Me neither. The only problem I had with AVG was that it didn't clean some viruses completely;they kept on coming back. To be fair, I used free version.

I have a laptop running XP and used to have Avast! on it. Now I got a new computer, I don't go online with the old laptop now. So, after removing Avast! the lag before I can usefully use any of the software on the XP machine has reduced from 10 or more minutes with the anti-virus to about a couple of minutes without.

That said, the XP machine only has 256MB ram, and when Avast! was on, I use Process Explorer to view it's activity, and it would be running a dozen scanning processes on during the startup time. I got somewhat fed up with it.

I found that I also had some corrupted RAM, or so Paint.NET reports as it doesn't run properly on it. So, it could be due to a number of things...

it does slow your computer down while its scanning, it shouldn't slow it down too much while innactive

Better to scan your files than not scan. Then when you come across a virus like that Adobe one it will go right through without being detected. You may might want to increase the speed on your computer.

When it's scanning, I can actually watch the cards glide across the screen when playing Spider solitaire.
