Should Christmas Trees be called Holiday Trees?

I will call a Christmas tree a "holiday tree" the moment that Jews call their menorahs " a bunch of candles", not a day before.

I know you're making a joke, but one school in Walnut Creek, California tried to rename the Easter bunny "the spring bunny."

It's rather funny (both 'ha ha' and 'peculiar' funny) if you think about it. All this 'PC bullshit' is intended not to offend anybody, but look how many people it actually offends.

There are times when Political Correctness is important and, perhaps, even vital, but it's a load of crap in most cases and causes more bias and arguments than it's trying to prevent.

Rather counterproductive if you ask me.
 
The problem here is that there are people who want to justify use of Christmas trees in certain settings by saying they're not really Christian.

It's not that non-Christians are asking for or wanting them to be called "Holiday Trees".

They're angry because people aren't recognizing Christianity as "superior" over all other religions. When you say "Happy Holidays" you include Christmas and other holidays - a generally polite thing to do. But that's not good enough because they don't want other holidays (religions) recognized.

They just want mandatory, required Christian practice and recognition.

Christmas trees are a long standing tradition in the Christian church, mainly for their symbolism. Christ is with us at all times of the year--that's why evergreens are always used as Christmas trees.

I'm still fine with "Happy Holidays" in the public realm because there are other holidays at this time of year. I can't say that I've ever personally wished someone "Happy Holidays" though. Always "Merry Christmas".

Many of my friends celebrate "Solstice" events, including a very popular concert series called "The Return of the Light." Let's really get back to the "Christmas Roots" and celebrate the Feast of Mithra. Ahh...love dem pagan holidays!

And of course you are right - but it's not just Christian holidays now...back in Roman times, Greek Times, Iranian Times, The New York Times, etc., etc...vendors and tradespeople (don't get to use that word too often) made their living by selling crap to the populace - who loved a good holiday - because they could get shit-faced, debouched, and who knows what else (ooo, it does sound like fun...) and chalk it up to "worship."

I have it in pretty good historical authority that very few people knew, or cared, about the details of who or what they were worshipping. So, nothing has changed. Christmas is just the "season du jour", if the "jour" is the past couple of thousand years.

Is "what the holiday is supposed to be about" really about taking us out of ourselves for just a little bit, and reminding us that we are not the center of the Universe - and that it really feels good to connect with other people in some kind of selfless way. Do each of those feasts, parties or debouched revels (I'm a methodist, we don't do too well in the "debouched revels" department, but I'm working on that!) just provide us with an opportunity to simply "let go", which is, after all, the key to enlightenment in every tradition?

Does anyone with an IQ over 50 really think that any God able to create the universe would have to knock up a 14 year old, and then have the baby born in a barn to complete the picture ? I hope not. But it makes for a good story, and, has some very profound and ancient archetypal roots.
