Should I buy the Blu Ray or the DVD?

Turns out I own a Blu Ray player that plays DVDs as well. I didn't know I owned either. I wanted to buy a copy of the movie Alpha, but I don't know the difference of a DVD and Blu Ray besides price. Is it worth buying Blu Ray?

I have only bought digital for years, but I want special features for Alpha.

I am similarly ignorant of Blu Ray vs DVD but, as far as I can tell, all Blu Ray players will play ordinary DVDs.
I guess it is like having a HD TV but only tuning into non-HD channels. AS bit of a waste

I have a DVD player that plays both and every CD from any counrty on earth not that pricey now I think!

Blu-ray is far supperior to DVD both in quality and content. Blu-rays can hold hours of extras. Spend the few extra bucks and go Blu-ray.

(By the way, all Blu-ray players play DVDs, but not all of them are zone-free. There are 3 Blu-ray zones: A, B, & C. You are in Zone A.

Blu-ray without question. I saw "Alpha" in the theater and the production design and cinematography are highlights. You definitely want to see it in the best quality you can.

This. Definitely buy the Blu-Ray.

Unless its something where Blu-Ray isn't an option, I won't buy DVDs any more.
Eventually I plan to get a Blu-Ray-4k player (like if my existing player was to die...even though I don't currently have a 4k TV setup)

These days I often find the blu-ray to be pretty much the same price - if bought at a place like Costco often cheaper than the DVD at a regular store...

Do not buy neither. They both are out of date.
Buy usb or just watch movies online.

Depends on the quality of your TV too. Do you have an HDMI input? If you aren't using HDMI you won't see the difference between blu ray and DVD

Assuming you have an HDTV, definitely buy the blu-ray. It is much better quality. All Blu Ray players play DVD as well but the reverse is not true.

I think it is one of the best movies of the decade.

Good to know. I will check the price at Costco.

I do. I don't know what it does, but my brother has mentioned it a few times to me.

For newer titles Blu Ray will look better. But for older stuff maybe not. If you were for example buying Brokeback Mountain, I'd buy the DVD. I bought Casablanca on Blu Ray because I found it in sale bin for $4. But it doesn't look any better on Blu Ray than it would have on DVD.

Aren't these all dying formats as peeps move to Netflix etc

Not everybody has internet, and not everyone has unlimited bandwidth. There is a market and there will be one for a long time.

Not everything is on the streaming services - and what is on there is not there forever.

When I buy a disc it is because it is something I want to have access to at any time I want it
