Should I stop buying from Petsmart?

That's bad for their stomachs, plus that doesn't help stinky puppy breath.

Been feeding raw beef bones (and more) safely to my dogs for about fifteen years now, vet directed and approved. Note that dogs are more or less designed to gnaw on raw bones like this. See their cousins wolves for example. Plus, bad dog breath is mostly a result of 1) overall poor health and 2) dirty teeth. Dirty teeth are cleaned by scraping against the bones. Real food improves their overall health. My senior dogs have never had to have a teeth cleaning as a result, and their breath is pleasant.

Additional benefits: they think it's fun. They get calcium etc. Bone-y poop helps express their anal glands, so no disgusting asshole infections or squirty ass oil surprises. And, I don't have to brush their teeth.

Having said that, I know the idea of feeding raw bones is off-putting to many people.

Do you go through a lot of gerbils and hamsters ?

When I'd buy from Petsmart in the past, yes. Gerbils need to be in pairs and anytime I'd get a pair, one would die within anywhere from two weeks to three months. Then the only choice would be to return the lone gerbil and start with a new pair or introduce a new gerbil to the lone one, and that is not easy because they don't always accept each other.

After a few rounds of unknown deaths, I did more research on where they get their animals from and how they're living conditions are and opted to stop buying from them.

I wonder if there are rodent breeders that are not large operations. Try to find one. In order to stay profitable I would think there would be no other way for a dedicated business in rodent pets than to be inhumane.

There are private breeders, just like how they have them for dogs and cats. There are actually registered gerbil breeders in the United States. Obviously there won't be as many as for dogs but to answer your question, yes, there are options outside of large chain stores. Just takes more effort to find them.

I shop there occasionally & would continue to do so (in my case for tropical fish and/or supplies)

The fish in some of their tanks don't always look all that good/healthy (but thats not just PetSmart, it's the others too).
Ofcourse I'll only buy if they look healthy..

My friend has to constantly buy goldfish and guppies because they have feeding frenzies where they eat each other.

Thanks for the info, Im all about animal equality.

*but where else I get my cheap hamster? -_-

hiks

There's a new petsmart by my house, I thought it was wonderful, expensive though.

Dog toothpaste: $15 #-o

I bought it anyway.

I bought dog toothpaste $1 from local dollar store and it works...:?

^ you did?

Damn, I'll have to check it out, thanks.

There was an interesting article on NPR yesterday about eating Guinea Pigs. Apparently, their faces and hands are delicious. Imports to the US are rising to meet the demand.

I have choices other than chain stores like PetSmart for the most part. I did buy an Elizabethan collar there the other day, but that was a rarity.

Isn't ..Taz from Aussie..he already ate roasted Guinea Pig when he adventuring to Chili/Lima? Yes they are delicious food source, same as rabbit.

I can't stand Peta or RSPCA they don't give a fuck about animals

I think south park nailed it.

their livestock is low quality. the products are fine however.
if you buy their animals, either take them to a vet, or medicate prophylacticaly against common diseases and parasites.
guppies do not predate on each other (though they will predate on their offspring while larval). they will however cannibalize the dead or dying. stick em in a cycled established tank, feed daily or 2x daily with a decent food (hikari brand is good) and they will be fine. if you get them from petco/petsmart, you will likely need a round of antiparasitics. metronidazole for a week, and levamisole to get rid of camallanus worms. levamisole must be dosed 2x, 3 weeks apart exactly to kill freshly hatched eggs vefore they become adults to make more eggs (it cannot kill nematodal eggs, only adults and larvae).
