To put it simply:

I want a game system.

Should I get the Xbox 360, which is readily available and the HD-DVD attachment?

OR

Should I wait until the Playstation 3 is more available, and not through Ebay for $1000?

I'm not a big gamer but when I get something I like to get the best that's out there, since I probably won't be getting another game system for a long time.

Also: Is the HD-DVD on the Xbox better than the Blueray on the PS3?
Does it matter if I have an HD-TV?
Would playing HD games and movies on a regular tv look better than
normal games and DVD's?

Thank you to anyone who can answer all these questions.

don't know. i'd say get the xbox just because i absolutely hate sony and their nasty reach in technology and media. then again, im not too fond of microsoft either.

i myself am still looking for a wii.

I'm in the same boat as you. I am a big Playstation fan, but it's way too expensive for me right now. Currently I'm thinking about buying a 360, since Gears of War is a beautiful game.

Since you're not a big gamer, going for the most expensive doesn't sound logical. So I would go for one that is moderately priced.

And until there is a clear winner between Blu-ray and HD-DVD forking out alot of money now wouldn't seem that logical either.

I understand that going for the most expensive isn't logical but I know that there wont be anything better coming out for the next few years. And it's better than buying a game system for several hundred dollars and getting a new dvd player that'll play the new formats, for more than a few hundred.

Just like when I bought my iPod. Why would I buy a Nano for $250 when I could just buy an iPod Video for a few hundred more and it can do so much more.

The Xbox 360 premium system costs $399.99 American. The HD-DVD attacment will cost you another $199.99 American (prices from Amazon.com) for a total price of around $600.00 american dollars.

Playstation 3 (20 gig version) costs $499.99 and the 60 gig version $599.99 and it plays blue-ray right out of the box.

Xbox 360 system still has "red light boot up problems" check the web!
Playstation 3 first batch is having some interesting "glitches" happening (check web!)

Xbox 360 has an awesome online environment for $50.00 a year american.
Playstation 3 online is free....yet not as good as xbox version.

Sony said there will be a limited shipment of PS3's every week until christmas. After christmas you'll see the stores full of them as the "guilty parents who don't spend enough time with there children and the fanboys" pick up all the PS3's that are out there. Hence the outrages E-bay stories.

We are the stranges species in the world. Where the only species that actually takes the time to screw our fellow man over money and capital gains. Interesting huh? :)

HD-DVD vs Blue Ray....it's been done before.....It was called the VHS vs. Beta wars. Bothsides say that there better then the other. The only truth I can tell you is that Blue Ray discs hold more info then HD-DVD. One game person for Rockstar games said that a Blue Ray Disc could hold all of the cities from all of the grand theft auto games and still have something like 70% disc space left.

YES. In todays age of video games they are being made assuming you have an HD TV. It's like the old debt of Widescreen vs Pan and Scan. Without an HD TV (I don't have one) your missing out alot on the game. One example is the zombie game for xbox 360 where your stuck in a mall. Without an HD tv, it's hard to read the subtitles. I've seen this with my own eyes!!

Playing HD games and movies will look the same as normal games and movies on a non HD tv.

So there you go. Should you wait? Should you buy? It's up to you.

But if your just a casual gamer....go Wii. However if your looking for great online games go Xbox 360. If your looking for awesome future RPG's go PS3. Cause xbox 360 is really lacking in decent RPG's of late as they can't seem to win over the ppl in Japan.

hope this helps!

I'm waiting for a PS3. It's all up to you, if you want to have a gaming system now, go with the XBOX 360, Nintendo Wii I hear will be the winner of the next gen gaming console war. PS3's are too expensive, that's why I'm waiting a couple of months until they at least lower the price down. Sony will start to see that since their systems aren't selling good enough they will lower the price down.

I have a 360 and it rocks! I am not really a gamer but the XBOX can play vids from your computer on your TV, a great thing for less than wholesome vids! It can also display pictures and play music. It is like a whole entertainment system allowing digital media to be played on a home entertainment system. Also XBOX live has great updates and added content for games available for free most times on XBOX live. Though I admit the Wii looks very cool, lacking HD and DVD playing capabilities it is well priced and is innovative in its interface. The PS3 for now is over priced with only mediocre game offerings for the launch. All game pundits have been saying as has my boyfriend who loves games almost as much as me! (!)

Like it was said before, unless you have an HDTV HD or Blu-ray doesn't matter. As for the format, they are similar in that they use a blue laser for reading as opposed to the current red, beyond that they are different. The HD DVDs while holding less data are more durable. They are comprised of the same plastic and aluminum that CD and DVDs are made of today and they still keep the foil depth at roughly 6 microns. The Blu-ray uses plastic and a silicon medium for data recording that is 1/6 as deep, meaning a minor scratch will hit the silicon, and silicon scratches easily!!!! This also means no resurfacing. But as it was in the beta vs. VHS war, where beta was better quality it was also more expensive driving the porn industry to adopt VHS ending the format war. Crazy huh, and guess what? The porn industry has chosen HD DVD!. I still wonder where it will go, but a projected silicon shortage meaning higher prices makes it seem almost assured HD DVD will win, besides I think silicon is better used in chips than DVDs. My two cents and data on the mater. :gogirl:

I would, and did, choose the 360. In the whole HD-DVD vs BluRay debate, Microsoft has said they will support HD-DVD as long as the format is a success, otherwise if it fails Peter Moore has said they will switch to BluRay. However, Im beginning to think both formats are DOA. Xbox just launched the Xbox live Video Marketplace which lets you rent movies or buy shows and download them to your 360 in HD res, which is really neat.

Also, for the 360, which unlike the playstation 3 actually comes with the cable you need for HD output looks amazing on an HD tv, but it will still look great on a regular tv. As mentioned before there are some issues with text, but I think game devs have begun to work on that.

As for HD movies, they will look slightly better on a standard tv, but not much. The picture will have less compression artifacts, but will still be as blurry as a regular dvd.

Besides, Gears of War is amazing. I dont even like shooters really, but amazon has the collectors edition for 2 dollars cheeper then the normal version. And personally im excited about banjo kazooie 3.
