If religious people are to shut up about religion and God does that mean the athiests and anti-religious will keep their mouths shut as well when it comes to voicing their anti-God/religion opinions?

There are lots of subjects that are a bit touchy and are hard to discuss without people getting upset, but when you start culling the panties-in-a-wad discussions, what else is there to discuss?

It has been noted that there are certain individuals who start religion threads to stir shit and not to have a mature conversation. Those I am all for getting rid of. But if someone is sincerely trying to discuss and share information about God and religion, then why should that be denied?

Those who don't like/believe in God or religion can just stay out of it and leave those that want to participate to post.

I would hope that the religious threads are not banned; that being said, I have found that some discussions can get quite circuitous in postings!

I have had some very deep and challenging discussions in the religious area. I have also become friends with several JUBBERS and had great lunches and further discussions with them. I know that religion was one huge area I had to finally overcome before I could say the words, "I am gay." There were a couple guys on this site that helped me get past that point and if not for them, I'm not sure I would have made it to where I am today.

Threads can get hijacked in the religion area, but they can just as easily get hijacked in Fun and Games!

Discussions in the JUB forum should be taken for what they are; an airing of thoughts/opinions/dispositions/feelings/reactions/exercises in amateur rhetoric and so on.
They can be more than a waste of bandwidth if people reflect about their own statements as well as other's. Maybe more interactions of 'Why do you think that?" and so on.

So we could say that religions, in effect, produce a lot, maybe most of the unnecessary grief.

The religious ones you hear from because they have their shit more or less organized.
I don't know. I'm speculating.

I don't actually think that religion threads should be banned, I was merely playing Devil's Advocate to generate some discussion into the topic.

It does seem, at present, that religion cannot be discussed sensibly in Hot Topics.

The Religion forum is a waste of space as a) Nobody posts there and b) Any questioning of a religion/belief system is construed as "flaming"

For some peculiar reason it appears to be perfectly okay to use 'robust' language when slagging off the bizarrely weird religion of Scientology (for example), but use the same language when talking about Islam, or Christianity (both equally bizarre to an outsider) and, apparently, it's considered 'flaming'.

And when you even mention the pink dragon that lives in the clouds above Cirencester that endorses gay bumsex, the Abrahamic religiosos just mock...fucking hypocrites.

HB's [human beings] have evolved a lot of fear-related instincts. Looking at it another way, it's one reason we're so smart.
I'm agreeing with you strongly.
Some of those instincts get cultivated more than others, depending on our/their socio-cultural conditioning.

It's 9:30am in the UK, I have just come home from work after a 10 hour shift. I haven't slept for 24 hours.
