Interesting that you said everyone has a hobby. I, in fact, no longer do have one.

Being retired now I must really start an interest in something.

Any ideas for a single "eldergay"?

I have the impression that you enjoy taking photographs, David :)

In America coin collecting is popular, I tend to lose interest in just about anything after a while.

Orchids. They bloom for months on end, give wonderful form and colour. Trying to get them to flower again has been a big challenge, but worth the wait when they do. I have one which hasn't flowered in three years, and others which give seasonal bloom continuously for a year and a half.

If I can find a camera that compensates for my trembling hands this may well be the winner.

Unfortunately in my tiny flat I really don't have the space for a collection of objects. Though I could find the space for a few more statues.

Orchids................

I am planning holidays every month, or at least a long weekend somewhere so plants might not be practical having no one to care for them during my absences.

In this case, I would recommend a sturdy heavy (non-plastic) camera, a good old analogue fully manual SLR e.g.
But if your camera must necessarily be a digital camera, then it's a bit more difficult, or at least a bit more expensive, I know :(

Tripods. Variety of sizes. Imposes some limitations, but I've found them useful.

Orchids like it warm and relatively dry, so they don't like to be watered too often. Once a week in summer is adequate, and in winter you can cut it down to once a fortnight. Feeding every week when in bloom in summer, once every fortnight or less in winter is ok I think, but you need to look into the type you want to buy. I have only the phalaenopsis types of various colours, and they have kept a room bright with their lovely displays.

What a sensible idea. I suppose monopods that telescope down to nothing must exist.

Yep. I have a tripod that's like 4 inches tall. I use it to photograph food sometimes. :D

Adam (medic1)!

You have far more cajones than I ever have, or ever will! (!) (!w!) (group)

Running, mountain biking, playing the guitar, videogames, staying with my pets, cooking, driving... I could be a good husband, someone marry me.
