We only showered after swimming, and it was a co-ed class and co-ed showers, so we weren’t naked.

How times change!
When I was in high school (early 70's) showering after gym was mandatory. Nobody minded, and there was none of this silly showering in underwear or swim suits. There was one giant communal shower.
In class it was easy to see who had gym the period before. The guys would have wet hair and reek of spray on Right Guard deoderant.
Back then everyone wore a jockstrap. I was required, but the requirement wasn't necessary. Everyone thought this was the norm, and you would have been laughed at if you wore gym shorts without a jock.
It was still the day of tighty whities. Out of 40 guys in our gym class, one guy wore boxers. Everyone else wore white briefs, nothing fancy, just FTL, BVD, dept store brands, etc. (whatever your mom bought for you)

Aussie guy here. Private school educated which meant plenty of sport abd plenty of showers. Even still I can name whichboys were cut or uncut, who wore undies, speedos or shorts in, who would be naked but in the corner and ever so nifty with the towel so as not to offer up a glimpse.
Personally I was a bit of a late bloomer, I had always been rather tall and solidly built for my age but puberty didn't come along until close to 14 so I was a little reluctant to let it all hang out until I had something to show.

Yeah, well, I'm glad you two found each other because I, for one, did not look forward to group showering. During summer vacation in between eighth and ninth grade, I knew that I was required to take swimming class once I started high school, and was paranoid about the shower part.
