How about TV shows that offer either a gay friendly message, however subtle, or a gay negative one. Also shows in which silence about us seems conspicuous.

Positive:
Babylon 5
Northern Exposure

Negative:
Star Trek (Sadly, because I like it. We don't seem to exist in the 23rd century.)

What do people think about Soap? Jody was the first gay character I ever saw on TV, and it meant a lot to me personally growing up.

Desperate Housewives, Brothers & Sisters, Modern Family, Ugly Betty, Simpsons, Family Guy, American Dad

Negative:

1. Girls who likes boys, boys that like boys

2. One Girl, five gays

3. BET

Positive;
Modern Family
Brothers and Sisters

Negative:
The Shield - The gay cop's sexual orientation was treated like a disease that he needed to be "cured" of. On the show they had him "cured" of being gay and the whole "Ex-gay" bullshit went completely unchallanged for the entire series.

Really? Ugh. I haven't watched the series yet, but I've always heard good things about it, so this disappoints me. Guess I'm not going to be watching it then.

In terms of well-rounded gay main characters, "The Wire" has a few. Best show ever, btw.

Positives:
The Wire both male and Female African Americans are gay in it what a rare thing unless u watch ANTM.
Brothers and Sisters
Modern Family
English soaps: Hollyoaks and Emmerdale and Coronation Street.
Family Guy etc
Doctor Who
Torchwood

There are lots more but I cannot think of them

im not a trekkie, but didnt they have lots of pro-gay metaphors? why did you list them as negative? asking because im curious.

on the pro camp, there is of course buffy and true blood.
veronica mars had its occasional gay storyline.

lost and battlestar galactica always seemed suspiciously devoid of gay characters to me, given how large the casts were, and for how many seasons the shows went on. i wouldnt say the shows were homophobic, but its a little disappointing that they would avoid the subject so wilfully.

(yes, i know battlestar galactica did have its share of minor gay characters; im aware of four, three of which ended up being traitors and/or psychotic. i still dont think the show is homophobic, i dont think the writers did that on purpose; but its disappointing that they werent more sensitive about the subject.)

Although he wasn't a HUGE character on LOST, Tom, one of the Others, was confirmed to be gay in (I think) the 5th season when Michael went to Tom's apartment in NYC and Tom was there with his boyfriend. Again, it was only one episode, but it's something.

BSG
Suggested that Caprica 6 and one of the 3's were having sex with each other as well as Baltar.
Cain was having a relationship with a 6.
Giada and Yoshi were in a relationship.

Yes there were negative aspects to some of these characters but hell because they were Gay/Bi did that mean they had to be nicey little prissy queens???
Hell half the straight characters were just as bad if not worse.

BSG, True Blood and Buffy are one's I forgot to put on my list as positives.

As far as I know I have seen every episode of The Original Series, The Next Generation, and Deep Space Nine. I have also seen many episodes of Voyager and Enterprise. I cannot recall a single gay character. There were gay metaphors, as you say, but never more than that.

I was hooked on Emmerdale eversince the character of Aaron Livesy came out. It was played brilliantly by Dennis Miller. But now, i watched it on youtube due to Marc Silcock that plays Aaron's boyfriend. The storyline will soon be closing to an end now, but its been great acting all through out each episodes. ;)

I just wish they will bring him back....sexier and cute as ever..!

There's a new tv show called 'Happy Endings' and they gay character on that show is sooo incredibly awful it's not funny. He's crass, rude and tactless. Everything about his character makes me want to cringe.
