Do you know anyone else who uses Latin ? In today's day and age, are you impressed by it's use? Hell, I'm impressed if someone can write a complete sentence, never mind Latin. You?

8-)

Ah what a joy it was reading Natural History by Pliny.

Because I don't know any, it obscures more than illuminates. I'm philistine about it.

It is a time honored language that ties together a common culture underlying the Western world.

VENI!

oh...it helps to be familiar with some of it when trying to translate coin legends

Oh, why do you and RB have to swipe at one another endlessly? School girls give it a rest more than you two.

To answer the question, Latin still matters. Like Christianity itself and Biblical allusions, only a fool would intentionally eschew learning them, as a few recently have announced. If one wants to comprehend as much of one's environment as possible, then one cannot afford to miss the many millions of allusions that are made to the Bible every day. The same holds true of Latin. It has not passed away, and still appears in myriad settings.

It is yet relevant even beyond the roots of common words.

^ There you go. Who knew it was a swipe? As Matt points out, Latin is a foundation to much of what we communicate in everyday life. As we all know, sermo vilis; vino pretio sum est.

I would note that latin is foundational to understanding and practising law.

Fixed. And yes, I am impressed by those few who can write a complete and correct sentence.

The only way I can make sense of this non-Latin is to emend it thusly: Sermo vilis, vinum pretiosum est.

Do you need it translated?

oops. I hit the space bar between the pretio and sum by mistake....but I have had another latin speaker recently argue that the vinum should be vino.

The version you cite is what we had painted on the wall in the office reception area about 30 years ago.

"I could’ve been a judge, but I never ‘ad the Latin… I never ‘ad the
Latin to get through the rigorous judging exams. They’re very rigorous, the judging exams, very rigorous indeed. They’re noted for their rigor. People come out of them saying, “My God, what a rigorous exam!” And so I became a miner instead. I managed to get through the mining exams. They’re not very rigorous. There's no rigor involved really. There’s a complete lack of rigor involved in the mining exams.
They only ask you one question. They say, “Who are you?” And I got 75 percent on that. "
