Sign language interpreter at Mandela memorial exposed as a fake, was gesticulating nonsense

Yes, you have to admire Helen Marsh— she did TEFL in her 'gap year' and she's happy to help out. She's got pluck!

I guarantee you they had to redo the scene twenty times before they could all do it with straight faces.

... It's like finding out the guy you hired to translate all your press releases into Spanish for the last five years has simply been typing "agua taco Jose Feliciano" over and over. How did nobody notice for so long?

Lex

I have seen that happen in real life.

A man with the surname Musolino in my local shopping centre asked for a multi-lingual advertising sign for his accountancy business. For six months the sign displayed the words (in Cantonese or something) Mr Fat Pig Musolini.

I thought that English sounded EXACTLY the same to Italians - except that they can't understand it, because it's not their language.

Hey, Russian sounds exactly the same to me as it does to somebody in Murmansk...excep5t that it's "unintelligible" to me.
********************
Maybe there are exceptions. I saw some documentary showing four "different" pronunciations in, I think, Hindi - where they all sounded exactly the same to me, but it was explained they all had different meanings, and a native speaker would notice the differences.

You want to tell me they have a poor culture of merit based hiring system in S.A.? Which politician is this guy related/connected to that he was able to get the job without legit vetting, qualifications? Our politicians also like to hire friends and families to job posts they're not qualified to handle, example Obama hiring a Kennedy to be ambassador to Japan.

OMG, i just saw the news saying the sign language doesn't make sense at all.
That was so funny ...

"meaningless hands movement .."

simultaneously funny and frightening that some random dude could get so close to the President.

Well... this is sorta what happens when you go off to a foreign country... you know, all those foreigners do their own thing because it's kinda their place, you know?

You wonder why so many 3rd World governments are in bed with the Chinese? Because they don't treat us like 2nd-class citizens in our own country, for starters. When Obama was in Cape Town a few months ago, we were all pretty much told to keep off the streets. When Clinton was here in the mid 90s the US Secret Service spent a week welding all our manhole covers shut.

Having your presidents come over to see us is honestly a lot more trouble than it's worth. I wonder when it will come out that Obama's people asked whether he could have the stadium to himself for the funeral since it is a security risk to have all those unvetted locals in there with him. I have no doubt the idea was bounced around before he got on the plane to come.

I'm right there with you on the catharsis thing. The saddest part is to see just how many of the world's craven toadying sycophantic media have covered not The Funeral of Mandela, but the other event, called "The Remarks of President Obama at the Funeral of Some Guy who was the President of Africa."

That's not the reason why "3rd world is in bed with China." 3rd world is in bed with China is because China has great interests in 3rd world resource market as its global relevancy through cheap internal slave labor is rising. China has set its eye for Africa's natural resources and cheap markets decades ago. They are not friendlier or more diplomatic when it comes to their financial interests. When Chinese president will have the global stature that of a U.S. president, then they too will enact tough security measures to protect their leader. It has nothing to do with China being nice with local populations.

Then why was he on the stage then? He was qualified in some shape or form to have gotten the position and he might have been a substitute or alternate or someone they got last minute for the job. Making a big deal out of nothing. At least they had a sign interpreter. I see local church sermons with big attendance on tv that have no sign language interpreters. Deaf people usually use captions anyways.

It's quite surprising that no one noticed or cared to out him as a fraud like 5 minutes into the his "signing" performance. Was he even a fraud? The reports state that he had been called upon to interpret before. Was this just a practical joke? I don't know anything about signing but it looks like he was just doing the same hand movements over and over. It's almost silly when you really pay attention to it.

Incompetence is one thing, if he actually tried and was just bad at it. He just looked lazy and like he couldn't give a damn. To my untrained eye of course.
