Making a big deal out of nothing. At least they had a sign interpreter.

No, they didn't. He wasn't signing anything. He wasn't interpreting anything. Anyone with a basic knowledge of sign language could see that. Just like spoken English is a common language, so is English sign language. There are dialects in both, of course, but, by and large, both are generally understandable by anyone who understands it. The guy was pretending to be speaking sign language. He wasn't.

This is played for fun, but the woman IS using sign language. Watch this short clip, then watch that guy below again. The difference is glaringly apparent. The guy is 100% fake:

The reports state that he had been called upon to interpret before. Was this just a practical joke?

The reports also state that people complained about his abilities, but he continued to be hired because he was thought to be a sign language interpreter. I used to teach sign language. I would truly like to know what credentials he put forward to get the job in the first place, or how he convinced everyone that he knew what the hell he was doing.

I reckon it's BS.

He's a party crony; alas, the ruling party is chock full of them. So are too many prominent positions in government and in all the major para-statal firms like the energy people, the national airline, the major transport players, the national roadworks agency, the company responsible for printing drivers' licences and ID cards, and all the private gold and platinum mines.

Sadly, even Mandela's legacy is tarnished by that last item after a scandal surrounding tens of millions of dollars in debt and unpaid wages from a gold operation called Aurora Mines:
