Sign language interpreter at Mandela memorial exposed as a fake, was gesticulating nonsense

Oh dear, yes i want to kill ALL handicap people. Next !!!

I never insinuated that. I said that you 'mock' them (that means 'make fun of'), and you do it quite regularly.

But, as usual, you completely ignore the original question and blame everyone else for your actions.

Yes,
No matter how i say it, you will NOT be satisfied.
This is called baiting !!!

I think JUBbers making personal remarks should take them to their Personal Messages.

Hahahaha, let's all poke fun at a man that is obviously having some sort of episode. He's repeating gestures, completely panicking yet remaining composed.

Sure, it sucks for the deaf. But if you find anything about mental health funny you're a fucking asshole, and should probably be shot and pissed on. No offence.

Yes, lets laugh at the jerk who passed himself off as a competent sign language interpreter and the idiots who didn't check his credentials or ability.

Real interpreter translates what the fake one was accidentally signing with his random hand flapping.

... credentials ...

Are there credentials?

I was under the impression that there are lots of slang gestures and 'shortcut' gestures that signers use within particular groups of people to quicken up the slow process. And that signing for a world audience is nigh on impossible because you cant use these short cuts.

Just to be clear, this was not a case of a man snapping under the pressure and freezing up. This was a man pretending to know sign language when he really knew nothing about it, who then deceived people who should've known better, so he could get money and/or attention.

It is so blatantly ridiculous, you almost wonder if it was staged to make Zuma look competent by comparison.

I suspect Mandela would have been pleased that even his funeral would have served the nation in exposing all its weaknesses in one go. He could do no more but now that the boil is lanced, hopefully someone will squeeze out the pus.

Are you referring to Zuma —whom lots of people are saying is corrupt— as the pus?

Who should squeeze out the pus? Do we need some outside intervention'?

Oprah Winfrey could easily give $1,000 to each and every South African to help squeeze out the pus?

... A rational assumption would be that the man must be somewhat qualified to be in such a prominent role, but [the deaf] are telling us that he is a total fake. Basically, he likely got through the system by connections and no one has been able to take him down.

That pretty much describes Zuma and his position as president.

Guys, please read this: http://www.huffingtonpost.com/rabbi-yehoshua-soudakoff/mandela-memorial-service-_b_4433479.html

It talk about deaf culture, and how they feel about it.

The author talks about being a minority within a minority, which is a very difficult experience indeed. Not only are there few deaf Jews, there are few Jews period. Depending on one's definition and progeny of intermarriages, there are only between 13 and 18 million of us worldwide. It is difficult finding an interpreter for Jewish events that mix in Hebrew words.

I was amused at one government official's attempt to explain it away by saying he was signing in a dialect. Seems he had an accent.

Signers do develop a personal "home sign" over time that they use with the immediate family and friends. But that wouldn't be used in such a circumstance.

I'm quite sure there is personal variations but she was implying more than that, that he was actually using some sort of regional dialect. Each nation has its own variations of sign language but the SA groups for the deaf says he wasn't using any version of the language and that they had complained about him before at other official functions and were ignored.

I mean something that deaf people use to communicate with non-signers generally. When my deaf cousins come over they often have to use universal gestures, ones they learned naturally to do from a very young age, but even then we have difficulty communicating beyond very simple ideas. Complex things must be texted. I really should learn to sign.
