Signal Of DVD's Demise?

Being old enough to remember 8-track tapes, cassettes and Betamax, we know a little something about the demise of once popular ways to be entertained.

The Associated Press says the announcement today by Netflix that it is shifting its focus to streaming video may signal the end of the DVD:

There will always be people like myself who can't and won't be able to afford streaming video. As long as there is a market, I suspect they will stick around for a while yet.

I doubt it will ever put an end to DVDs. Streaming may be good for rentals, but there are many (like me) who like to have a physical product in hand.

harddrive is so cheap now.

Movies/videos should be as files for computer and dvd player ...

Some people LIKE to have movie libraries...

So I DOUBT it will END DVD's...

However, I'm a NETFLIX customer -- and I probably watch 6 streaming movies to every 1 DVD...

I PREFER that technology -- but FORTUNATELY for DVD MAKERS -- not EVERYONE is like me...

:):):)

No, I don't think so. Netflix will REALLY have to upgrade it's video quality first. Their streaming movies have really soft video.

Physical copies of media will eventually go the way of cassette tapes. Take a look at Blu-ray for example. How many people own computers with Blu-ray players and Blu-ray burners? Very few. It's not catching on in the age of streaming HD and downloadable content, and DVD doesn't offer high resolution that people are now used to. It'll take a while, but both forms of storage will be dead.

I still use DVDs to burn music and backup files. I don't see them going out anytime soon. Same with CD-R discs people still use those to listen to their created music tracks from iTunes or Windows Media Player.

ODDLY enough -- you know TIMING and SUCH...

I JUST received this NEW Email from NETFLIX...

Dear swerve,

We want to let you know about two important changes to the Netflix service.

1. The price of your current plan is changing from $16.99 a month to $19.99 a month. This new price will be effective with your next billing statement on or after January 2, 2011, and will be referenced in your Membership Details. With your current plan you can both instantly watch unlimited TV episodes and movies on your computer or TV and receive unlimited DVDs by mail.

2. We now also offer a new $7.99 a month plan which lets you instantly watch unlimited TV episodes and movies on your computer or TV. This plan does not include any DVDs. All the titles you can watch instantly on your current plan are also available on this new plan, and as a reminder, not all titles on DVD are available to watch instantly. This new plan is available immediately – if you'd like to switch to this new plan at any time, simply visit Your Account.

Why the changes? Our selection of TV episodes and movies available to stream has grown dramatically, and as a result most members want us to deliver unlimited movies and TV episodes two ways: streaming instantly over the internet plus DVDs by mail. The price change will allow us to continue to offer the popular plan choice of unlimited TV episodes and movies streaming instantly along with unlimited DVDs. The new plan, which does not include DVDs, is a great option for the increasing number of members who only want to watch instantly. The $7.99 a month price reflects no DVD shipping costs on this plan.

We hope you're enjoying great TV shows and movies from Netflix, and that you'll continue to enjoy Netflix on whichever plan you choose. We realize you have lots of home entertainment options, and we thank you for your business. As always, if you have any questions, please call us at 1-800-715-2146.

–The Netflix Team

So -- YEAH -- I'll be REDUCING my membership fee to the $8/month deal...

:lol::lol::lol:

Hopefully this will signal the demise of the cable monopoly.

I got the same email today also. They must have sent it to all subscribers. I definitely stream more than have dvd's delivered but I do like having both options. Not all content is available for streaming.

I got that email about an hour ago. I'm sticking with my 2 DVD's at a time/streaming option. The streaming option is cool but the library isn't big enough. I just streamed Madonna's Sticky & Sweet tour a few nights ago. I'm glad I didn't shell out $200+ a piece for the concert tickets. To say I was disappointed is an understatement.

Just like people used to have vinyl LP collections. And where are they now...?

Never surrender!!!!!:=D:

I'm going from the 3-DVD-a-month plan to the 2-DVD-a-month plan. Because I mostly get movies as BluRay and that's a much higher resolution than streaming.

I wouldn't mind streaming a low-res TV show like Queer as Folk (which we're watching now) but they don't offer it in a streaming version. In fact, there's not much good stuff they stream.

I hope that changes.

remember dvd players are stupid machines. since these new streaming machines are taking over, i am willing to bet that dvd manufacturers will do some funky stuff from now on.

As much as I travel, I prefer streaming movies. No physical DVDs to take along with me as I travel. If I'm on a business trip (to various locations) for weeks, I don't have to wait until I get home for my DVDs to arrive. If it's available on iTune, I can stream it right away anywhere. Without physical DVDs, I also managed to reduced clutter around my house.

I don't remember the last time I actually buy a physical CD for music either. It must have been 3 years ago.

I'm an iTunes guy. I'll rent them from iTunes, buy them if I really like them enough.

Now that you can stream video right from your iPad to your Apple TV, it changes everything. I can just bring my iPad to a friend's place... stream movies to his TV from it then take it back home when I'm done.
