Sitting or Standing. Which is better?

Sorry, I forgot to mention....I'm working in a retail job....and I have to be standing, moving around all the time and carrying heavy stuffs.

Some of you said that standing burns more calories. Some of you said that standing do not burn calories. Who is right?

If standing do burn more calories, does this mean I have to eat even more than usual since I do have a high metabolism rate.

They both burn calories at a very low rate. It won't be significant. Sitting still or standing still are the last things you have to blame if you become thinner.

The only activity not burning calories at all is lying still. Or being dead.

Just standing burns enough calories more than just sitting to come in at less than if you chew gum four hours a day.

Hmm, I read an article a while ago that said that it's actually best to do a combination of both, without ever going too long doing either. Standing or sitting both have consequences if you do them all day (clearly you should save yourself the trouble and just float around, right?). It's better to alternate between sitting and standing.

I'm at the computer for hours and sometimes I can tell that I'm doing damage. Certain muscles in my back/neck and my wrist from using the mouse. I try to watch my posture, but it's so easy to fall into bad habits.

Yeah you are right. For us CG students it's always good to get up and walk around a bit after long hours and sitting in front of the PC.

Once in a while I see someone, usually looking like they haven't done much physical activity for a while, decked out in their best jogging outfit and making jogging-like motions, but moving forward actually no faster than walking.

I don't even mean jogging in place. They just move differently and think they are jogging.

I actually do jog in place. I'd rather exercise in my living room than go out. My friend calls it "Lexercise". :)

The general consensus I'm seeing now is that the distance covered more or less determines the health benefit of the exercise. It doesn't matter if you walk a mile, jog a mile, or sprint a mile (assuming you can).

I spend most of my day on my feet.
I get to sit down when I am teaching small-group reading.
Otherwise, I am on my feet.
That's why I buy very comfortable shoes to wear.

A mix of both standing and sitting is probably good for your overall health, especially cardiovascular health. I would try to get in some sitting so you don't wear out your veins. Standing itself is not going to get you where you want to be in terms of muscle tone, but yes it will burn significantly more calories than a sedentary job. I'm sure there is more than enough advice on diet to bulk up without my input on that.

d all the time and carrying heavy stuffs.

More. Google it. About 300 calories more per workday by standing.

Check out this insanity. A treadmill desk!
