simply because he ended their 5 year relationship. you don't know who will do what to you for whatever reason. it seems like it's usually the younger person in the relationship that ends up flipping out too.

Consider this, R. - just the fact that something like this GETS INTO THE NEWS, says that it's something that happens only rarely. It's sort of the same reason that things like airplane crashes (often even with small aircraft), skydiving accidents, roller coaster deaths, tornado deaths, etc. will make the news - they're rare.
Flooding deaths make the news for different reasons - they usually occur when the weather is already creating plenty of other havoc or threat, and often multiple deaths are involved.
You don't see news stories about people being killed in auto accidents, because it's common. Even lightning strikes are relatively common compared to these other things, and you generally never see those in the news either, unless there's a group of people who are struck and killed at the same time (which I think happened at the Masters Golf Tournament in Georgia about ten years ago).
I'd say your chances of getting murdered by somebody off craigslust (INTENTIONAL TYPO HAHA) or OKCupid are negligible but, then, you're never absolutely safe. Remember just after NineOneOne when Flight 800 (??) killed people on the ground when it fell out of the sky in Queens.
But also think about this: A couple days ago you were JUST ABOUT TO WALK INTO a possibly lethal situation this weekend.
I am very happy and relieved that you reconsidered...and there are other people in here from other places even quite far away (Nevada, etc.) who certainly were happy about your later decision as well.

You have to date a person and find out their character first. I would not live with someone until I dated them for at least a year and they had their own place.

I've always said that choosing roommates, IN AN IDEAL WORLD, really needs to be as carefully considered as a full-fledged marriage. More than often, though, one has to rely on shortcuts and inadequate information when choosing roommates.
One roommate killing another is rare, as I said, but for every one of those, there are probably thousands of roomie situations which end up being horrible because of not getting along with each ohter very well.
