I've got an unusual problem...

Ever since I was young (wow.. that seems so long ago! LOL) probably from the age of 20 onwards, I noticed that my sleep pattern had gone haywire.

So, what I tried to do was go to bed around 11pm, get comfy and read a book for a while. Waited for that 'drifting off' feeling to arrive, but it never came.

Well... I'm 38 now, and rather than growing out of it, it's still as bad as ever. I've been to 3 Doctors, who have all done tests, which have come back negative and they are all puzzled as to why I am not sleeping. I won't touch sleeping pills at all! (I tried to end my life once.. but not cos of this problem!)

These days, I am pretty much used to being awake all night, and just sleeping the odd hour (believe me... I feel fine afterwards). The only thing I cant get used to is the constant feeling of being alone. I would ask the partner to keep me company, but these days, all he cares about is himself... full stop! (trust me.. I was seriously ill once, and I still had to do everything myself)

I don't think it's stress... as I run my company from home, and work is stable at the moment... and all fine there. It's definately not financial worries as again, stable there too. I think it might be that I constantly feel alone.

Any ideas? I would love to hear (or rather read!) your thoughts... thanks all ;)

What tests did they do?

Hiya,

They did blood tests, one sent me to a specialist in London (UK) to see if they could help, but even they were stumped! lol.

I even had a full medical carried out by one of them... and no joy there either.

But no sleep study?

An issue I have much considered , in that I have always had major problems in that my natural sleeping patterns bore little remblance to the rest of the world and now , I am disabled , live entirely alone and cannot be said to have any sort of externally imposed schedule ; even now appointments are a major problem . Now I naturally adhere to a cycle that is much longer than 24 hours ; I often stay awake 40 hours or longer without feeling in the slightest bit tired and then sleep for 15 hours or longer . I believe that perhaps recently our society has imposed common sleeping patterns that are very difficult and unnatural for many - one clear example might be switching from day shift to night shift - some can do that easily , others after years never quite change . A test might be the commonality of sleeping pills and alarm clocks : artificially externally imposed means to force you sleep when you're not tired and wake you up when you are . I have realized that in the past five years I have spent maybe 2 hours total awake in my bedroom : I do not go to bed until I'm tired (minutes before I fall asleep ) and do not spend any time in there after waking ( so we both have a few hundred or thousand generations before us of heterosexuals who lived on a 24 hour schedule but we are not quite comfortable with it , it is not quite spontaneous . Darwinianism , anyone ? )

csb999... thanks for your input on this. Seems I am not the only one having sleep problems ;)

As for sleep study... I did my own in the end. Using the internet, and a coffee one night, I read up on sleep issues. Then, I started a log which I keep all details of sleep times, and awake times. It makes interesting reading! LOL.

Weighing all the information together, I believe another factor in my life is the current 'relationship' which I am in. (long story!)

I might start my own blog soon, and see if that helps me.

Thanks for the replies, everyone... your input is much appreciated (*8*)

Although a sleep log is a good idea, it is not the same thing as a sleep study.

A sleep study (polysomnography) has you sleep with wires hooked up to your body that measure your breathing, heart rate and movement. It also monitors your brain waves to track your sleep cycles.

It is the definitive diagnostic test for sleep disorders.
