  • Hi Guest - Did you know?
Hot Topics is a Safe for Work (SFW) forum.

Smack Stephen Harper

Then Canada needs to change the first past the post system. Until then the Conservative Party is the sole governing party.

I read in another thread somebody calling you out for continually failing to understand Canadian politics and man they were right. They ARE NOT the "sole" governing party. Maybe you should avoid topics you're not entirely informed about.

Indeed. A 'majority' doesn't necessarily give Harper carte blanche.

It's my guess that he doesn't even understand the way our prime ministers are elected, what with things like PM, MP, MPP, etc.

A 54 pct representation in parliament does assist Harper legislate more easily.

I can also read Canadian newspapers, as well as you.

Can't complain he made me a lot of money.

Well let me complain then, because this lying son of a bitch and his dog Flaherty cost a lot of Canadian individuals thousands and even tens of thousands of dollars when they destroyed the income trusts that many people had as a component in their pension funds here.

From that moment onward, I decided that you couldn't trust a single word that came out of that man's mouth.

Posting opinions that go against the popular sentiment (anti Harper) on this site attracts abusive comments in plenty. Yours is one of many. A few of us are happy enough, and sufficiently resilient to post minority views without fear of being offended by those who do not share our views.

It would appear that the Conservative Party has a parliamentary majority that enables it to govern without voting assistance from other parties.

No, it can't. The fault lies in the flawed system, whereby the Tories won despite 60 per cent of the vote against them.
And 40% of the popular vote only works out to about 25% of all eligible voters (if I'm not f*ucking up my math). I'm happy with the election result within the confines of our electoral system, but I do agree it's shamefully unfair and change becomes more important at every election.

As depressing as it is that he has a majority government, I'm looking at the bright side. My party won it's highest amount of seats, ever. We're pumped.

^Well then please tell us how the federal elections turn out.
The Tories will win with a majority, the Liberals will be reduced to a rump and the NDP will form the Official Opposition.

In 2015, the Tory majority will be reduced to 158, but almost immediately the New Demeral Party will defeat them with a vote of no confidence over the budget because three Tory MPs are in jail for blaspheming in public.

^Well then please tell us how the federal elections turn out.

Canada's government is decided by 'seats' in the House of Commons in Ottawa. Currently, there are 308 seats in the House - 'seats' being positions in parliament held by elected MPs (Members of Parliament).

The party with the most seats is the ruling party. If the ruling party has less seats than the other parties combined, it is a 'minority' government, meaning that the ruling party must battle the other parties to get things done. However, if the ruling party has more seats than the other parties combined, then it is a majority government.

With this election, the House is divided thusly:

Conservative Party of Canada - 167 seats
New Democratic Party - 102 seats
Liberal Party - 34
Bloc Quebecois - 4
Green Party - 1

If you do the math, the CPCs have 167 seats. The other parties combines have only 141 seats. Thus the majority government. (The NDP are the 'official opposition' for the first time in Canadian history.)

^ Yeah, it'll be interesting to see how the New Dems handle it.

I was under the impression that in a majority the other parties opinions count for precisely crap. So what does it matter? (Just a question, not being bitchy);)

Here's how it works:

Harper can introduce bills into the House of Commons for discussion and voting. Just because Harper has a majority government doesn't necessarily mean that the bills will pass. That's where the Official Opposition (the New Democrats) come in. You see, Harper doesn't have a solid majority. He has only a 26-seat majority. All Layton has to do, as the leader of the Official Opposition, is to convince 27 Conservatives to vote against the bill and the bill is defeated. It's happened before. And Conservatives have defected in the past due when the Conservative party got out of hand.

The Opposition has a vital job in parliament. The don't just sit around with their thumbs up their butts.

^ Then there is a silver lining?

It's more a charcoal grey, but at least it's a lining.

What Pianist meant with: "^ Yeah, it'll be interesting to see how the New Dems handle it." is that Jack Layton can buckle down and do his work as Opposition leader or he can let the power go to his head and really fuck things up, which even the Conservatives have been known to do on occasion. (In one recent election, they really fucked up and dropped to only 2 seats in the House. Those were good times.)

If Justin Trudeau decides to run for Liberal Party Leader, and if he's anything like his father, the Conservatives will be in very deep doo-doo.

'Daddy Trudeau' got the ball rolling on gay rights and, ultimately, same-sex marriage, way back in the 60s.

One of his most famous quotes dates back to December 21, 1967:

“The state has no business in the bedrooms of the nation.”

His riding is right next to mine. He is just starting his political career, I have not heard much about him before the election, now people are talking about him leading the Liberal party.
