Small apartments

I saw a 220 sq foot apt for sale in paris. It was listed at $240,000. But as they say its all about the location.

Wrong - that calculator is insensitive to rent control and other factors which result in a factotum!

I've used it to calculate $184 from 1974 and it was right on the dot at around $1000. It's quite reliable. You must have had a great place.

Where are you people finding apartments for $500? You wouldn't even be able to find that in my hometown, Sudbury, with a population of 150,000.

It depends where you want to live, if you want to live in the middle of nowhere, or in a bad area you may find something cheap. You won't find any work there, or you will be lucky to find a minimum wage job.

Str8 people can live anywhere. As a gay person I want to live within a 30 minute drive of a gay area.

What exactly do you consider a "bad area"?

You can find cheap places that are decent in Edmonton, Calgary, or Saskatoon for example, and all 3 of those places have excellent job markets and pretty much any city amenity you'd need, plus you don't have to pay for parking unless you live smack downtown.

I LOVE IT!!! ..|

And YES!!!

I would trade our THREE STORY home with a pool in the suburbs of Atlanta for the OPPORTUNITY to LIVE in MANHATTAN!!!

Little Tiny Spaces don't bother me at all...

:):):)

yeah - you get an apartment. That's what you pay for. What do you think it is?

Well Shucks maybe we should just all move down to Mayberry with you Gomer! How'd ya like them cherries?
We could come out to your hollow and settle on down in the south 40 and for a fun time go people watching down at the Wal-mart then stop back by the mini-mart to get a couple 6 packs of Pabst Blue Ribbon before getting back to your mammoth place to hunt water moccasins with our teeth.

If you are getting to the point that its a waste of money to rent apartment, then that is bullshit. There are many who don't want the hassle of a house, or a yard, or homeowner dues on a Condo, A house can be or is a lot to it rather your own it or even rent it.
You pay rent to have a roof over your head, it beats the green benches in the park. You have to pay to live somewhere and some like apts. They have there ups and downs.

I live in a 10'x12' studio app. with a Bathroom of les then 4'x4' feet (when I am in the middle of my bathroom, I can reach to all 4 walls...

And I pay 440CND$, including electricity, hot water and heating...

My bedroom is 30'x15' and I pay $300/month.

What? About seven years ago, there was a segment on CBC news about Calgary. People working full time couldn't find a place to live and were at a homeless shelter.

Not in my neck of the woods. $500 MAY MAY get you a room in a house. I pay $1410 for about 1100 sq ft. I would have to pay more than double that price living in the city.

It's a compromise. Pay more for the convenience of living in the city or get more square footage being a little bit outside of the city. I chose the latter.

Oddly, the rental stock in the suburbs here is about the same price as downtown. Also, I find the quality of downtown apartments better. The suburbs offer basements, while on the other hand, downtown offers spacious, purposely-built apartment high rises.

Houses are a different story, though. It costs a million to buy a termite-eaten bungalow downtown.

You get the location the apartment is in, the surrounding activity.

You get the ability to have literally hundreds of restaurants featuring cuisine from all over the world in walking distance (a ton of which deliver).

You get a train that takes you nearly anywhere you want in the city 24 hours, a residence that cab drivers are not hesitant to stop at, in a city which is so central to the world, it's possible to meet people from around the planet on a daily basis without even trying.

You get laundromats and other amenities within a block, making it completely possible to never leave your neighborhood if you wish not to.

You get a city full of museums, libraries, art galleries, free concerts, parades, festivals, and nonstop activity.

The money isn't just for the apartment, it's for the lifestyle that comes with it. It may not be for everyone, but for some of the millions that live here, it's worth more than $500.

I think you just convinced me to move there..

I could see myself doing something like this, if only just to live in Manhattan. It may be a small place...but like her, I would make it work. :D [...]
*And if you want a decent apartment (even in Alabama) you're going to pay for it. My first apartment here was a one bedroom in a really nice part of town and just over 700 sq ft. for $500 a month.

That's it. I lived in a place 3 times bigger than where I live now which is 3 times more expensive. But if you want to live uptown, that's what you get. And the gay neighborhood at the end of your street... you got to pay for that....
