I've been waiting to see if anyone else would start a thread.

Did you see it? And what did you think of it?

I liked...but didn't love it. It seemed a bit flat somehow.

I... loved... it! LOVED it! It's so good it brought tears to my eyes. Katharine McPhee is incredible, and how can you go wrong with Debra Messing and Anjelica Huston. There were so many little subtle touches in every scene. Totally a class production from start to finish.

Only thing I'm not 100% on is that the whole series is going to be based on a musical about Marilyn Monroe, and I've never been that big on her. But Marc Shaiman, the guy who wrote Hairspray, is writing real, original songs for the show, and when has that ever happened before? No seriously, that's a trivia question. Anybody remember the last TV series that had original songs every week?

Being in the business, it felt really glossed over to me. Maybe we'll delve more into the relationships between the people as we go on, but it feels pretty superficial right now as they haven't even scratched the surface of the drama that actually goes on off-stage. That said, I agree that the performances were great - especially the last one - they way they edited that and built it up to the end of the episode was really stunning and left me looking forward for the next episode, and I liked the way they took them out of the audition room and into their heads, and in the rehearsal room the way they cut back between the actual "audition", and the staged number as we really do sit there and imagine what it would ultimately look like, and the conversation when Ivy was standing in the kitchen and called her Mom really hit close to home - I've had that conversation lots of times. I didn't care for the McPhee girl during American Idol - but she wasn't bad here, and the man that plays her boyfriend - while not familiar to me - totally adorable. I'm looking forward to watching the series, and will probably like it regardless, but I hope it gets a little more, um, deep.

^The guy playing her boyfriend was on two BBC series, that I know of...MI-5 and Mistress.

Unlike some critics I was impressed by every aspect of the show.

I thought all of the actors did a great job. I've always liked Debra and Angelica. and I was quite impressed by Katherine, for whom I had had very low expectations. (I thought having her sing Somewhere Over The Rainbow, her biggest success on American Idol. only to be told, "We've heard enough." was quite funny.)

Jack Davenport (the sleezy director) was terrific.

The numbers were staged beautifully and I really liked the songs. I understand there is some hope of turning the show's Marilyn musical into a genuine Broadway show.

My biggest fear is that I will get heavily invested in the show and then it will be cancelled.

This is my fear with every show I get into and I have good reason too: Eli Stone, Pushing Daisies, The Middleman, Deadwood, Carnivale...need I go on?

NBC/Universal seems determined for everyone to see it.

They re-ran it on NBC, Bravo and Oxygen last week.

NBC is desperate for a hit and I don't think this sho will be one. I was excited to see it but turned it off after a half hour. It was boring and the British guy (whoever he is) was dull! It will probably get canceled.

After it at in my DVR for nearly a week I finally got around to watching it last night. I think it has promise I love the characters, and as someone wrote "How can you go wrong with Debra Messing and Anjelica Huston."
Katharine McPhee is truly awesome I even liked the director played by Jack Davenport the sleaze bag you want to hate.
While I don't know how true to form it is I got a sense of what it must be like to be a struggling actor in NY.

I LOVED IT! Probably because it's set in NYC and is starring Grace Adler!

I'm not the musical type but I enjoyed the performances.

Thats why i was so excited about the show, any show that films in NYC i love and support. But this one, i cant get into.

Now Prime Suspect, me liked and Pan AM as well...two shows that filmed in NYC.

The city brings a total different vibe to a show...its like a character of a show.

I was thrilled with the show. Then again, this type of show is right up my alley.

I thought the music was great. The story has been good. And there was a major twist I did not expect at all.

I'm not sure how they can follow up after that but I'm excited to see.

Thought the first episode was amazing. Especially the rivalry between Ivy and Karen. "Let Me Be Your Star" is a hit, like it's been around forever. So far I like, but it's slipping in the ratings...so tell a friend to watch.

Episode 4:
Original air date February 27, 2012
Plot

When Derek (Jack Davenport) hosts a party for young teen star Lyle West (guest star Nick Jonas), Eileen (Anjelica Huston) seizes the opportunity to try a new strategy for raising funds. Karen (Katharine McPhee) learns how to increase her chances of success in the high-stakes world of Broadway and Tom (Christian Borle) goes on a special first date.
[edit]Production

Nick Jonas was announced to guest star on the show on October 11, 2011.[2] His character of Lyle West is described as "a hot sitcom star who started his career as a child actor in a Broadway show written by Tom (Christian Borle) and directed by Derek (Jack Davenport)."[2] The release also mentioned that Jonas will sing in the episode.

Any thoughts on the latest episode?

I think with Episode 4 things started to get a lot more real, and in this last episode things just started getting downright ugly. I find it odd that the hateful closet case assistant has been a non-entity lately, and the guy that plays the son to Debra Messing's character can't act his way out of a paper bag (nor could Nick Jonas in his guest stint last week), but for the most part I'm enjoying the show, and appreciating the development of the characters. The ending of this last episode was a bit of a surprise. And it looks like next week things get even uglier. In theatre the drama onstage is such a fraction of what takes place offstage - so in that respect, they're doing the show right. Amongst my friends I was watching the show with, we all expressed an interest in seeing an actual production of "Marilyn The Musical" -- it looks like its going to be a great show.

I'm still hooked on the show! 'History is Made at Night' was amazing. I also loved Ivy's version of 'Who You Are'. Karen's 'Shake it Off' was probably my favorite thing they've done so far!

Good news for "Smash" fans. NBC, reporting a growing audience, has renewed the show for a second season. More viewers are staying with NBC after "The Voice" and apparently are getting hooked on it.

"Smash" is losing a number of actors for its second season, including Raza Jaffrey and Jaime Cepero. Brian D’Arcy James and recurring actor Will Chase also won't be back next season.
