Last night at 9:30 I was on JUB and Yahoo posing with Mills. I hear fire trucks getting closer. I see from the side red flashing lights. A fire truck, in front of my house. I look out and 4 more trucks come up, the street is all blocked.

The house next door had a porch fire where they store their junk. The fire dept also wrote the people up for the mess. I did not have a fire here but the house was filled with smoke. It was so smoky here last night I had to sleep wity Oxygen on. Now this morning my entire house smells of smoke. How do I get rid of this smell?

The Firemen were hot, too bad it was so dark out I could have taken pictures.
 
^^^ No, we don't pay-per-conflagration for the services of the fire department. What apparently happened is that the neighbors were issued a citation, about like a traffic ticket, for being in violation of the fire code. I'm sure the same thing happens in the UK.

As for getting rid of the smell -- sorry dynk, it's not going to happen. I had a major smoke incident in my kitchen in a previous house and it still stunk when I moved out two years later.

You can try scrubbing, but smoke gets everywhere. The good news is that you'll notice it less as time goes by. But people visiting you for the first time will be wrinkling their noses for some time to come.
 
I just got through re-doing the entire house. Everything is new from the kitchen to the bathroom and all the furniture and curtains. Now it stinks.
 
Can you send your neighbors a bill for the smell? LOL.

Actually you might try Woolite spray-on upholstery cleaner. It's easy to use and it works pretty well. I bought a chair at the "antique" store and it got rid of the musty smell.

I would make the absorbent materials a higher priority than the walls, etc. for now.
 
Contact your insurance company. Have them recommend a fire clean-up company and file a claim. It should be covered. You won't be able to get rid of that smell on your own.

Thanks guys I did contact my insurance company and they are coming before noon to check it out. Problem now is the deductible.
 
About 25 years ago, I was coming home from a friend's house and had to wait at an intersection for 2 fire trucks to go through. They turned into the direction I was travelling. I drove right behind them as they turned onto my street and ended up stopping right in front of the house I was living in and ran in the front door. My house was on fire!

I was living in a basement apartment at the back, so I didn't get any smoke, but it was scary following those damned trucks home.

(Oh, and I didn't really notice if the firemen were hot or not. I was too busy panicking.)
 
I hate to hear about the smoke smell. On "Dear Heloise", the other day, she recommended using vinegar and spices, like cloves or whatever you like, placed in a pot on the stove and simmer. Keep an eye on it and don't let it burn. Another thing, I've tried for an odor, was vinegar (no heat) in small bowls placed in different rooms. It wasn't for smoke, but for something dead, probably a frog in the wall. It helped get rid of the smell.
 
Your insurance company should be able to contact your neighbour's insurance company for coverage.

But the best thing I've found is lots of ventilation. Just leave all the windows open for a while. Well, if you're not getting the smell from next door.
 
There are companies that specialize in accident/devestation refurbishment...Look in your yellow pages.
 
- ventilation - open the windows, turn on the fans, etc.

- white distilled vinegar and water in a spray bottle: vinegar will neutralize odors (also good for cleaning carpets because you don't have to worry about soaps staying in your carpet...which can make your carpet look dirty more quickly)

- putting volcanic minerals around your home will help soak up the odors as well.

I would never recommend spraying chemicals all over the house...but that is just me. :) I keep my home as natural and non-toxic as possible.

I have experienced the same thing with forest fires. The smell will go away but these things will help. If you have drapes, you may need to spray the drapes and upholstery.



Off-topic: were you able to find any of those laundry detergents that will work for you? I like to try a variety of them. I just started using 7th generaltion and really like that one.

Im actually kinda getting to like our flawed system here in the UK.. it may be shit.. but at least its free at the point of issue. :-)

I know when i burn trash in the Yard,if the house smells i just open all the doors and windows (when the smoke has gone - obviously), and just let it airate. If you need to get it from furniture, just get some Fa-Breeze or similar.

Who has to pay them? Normally it is the local government that pays for it, at least in California. It sounds like his neighbor was fined because they did not take care of their property and created a fire hazzard. It sounds like to me that the fine was justified.

Burning trash in the yard? What the heck. Do you live on a farm? I couldn't see someone trying that in the suburbs. Have you ever considered composting?

Thanks everyone. I can not use air freshners that are scented with my emphysema, and allergies. I did find some unscented Fabreeze today.
 
You need an ozone generator, one strong enough that you have to leave while it is on.
