Smoker's beware!

My Western frame of mind would suggest that the criminal should appear before a magistrate and be rewarded with a hefty fine.

30 lashes would appear to me to be symptomatic of torture, rather than a punishment, or incentive not to re-offend.

The punishment should fit the crime.

the man should be given a warning notice saying smoking is illegal.

If he didn't receive any warning notice, 30 lashes as a punishment is criminal. The judges should receive 30 lashes also because they didn't do their job as a judge.

He was advised of the rules Telstra, and asked repeatedly by the Airline staff to put it out. Despite all that he refused. Knowing the punishment that would be he continued to smoke. Is 30 lashes excessive, of course it is, but it is the law in that particular country. And, while westerner's look at that and think it's barbaric it's a pretty standard punishment in alot of places in the world.

I can only view this matter through my set of eyes. My morality encourages me to believe that such punishment is inhumane and contrary to the United Nations Declaration of Human Rights. Saudi Arabia is a member of the United Nations. Clearly such punishment flagrantly conflicts with Saudi Arabia's obligations to honour its commitment to respect for all human rights.

I may add that those who support such punishment as the lash should also appreciate that countries such as Saudi Arabia, and their next door neighbour, Iran are also well disposed to torturing and/or executing gay people, whose only crime was to enjoy sexual relations with another man.

Either we condemn such acts of human barbarism, inflicted by Saudi Arabia and Iran, in their entirety or face the prospect of being accused of selective support for despotic regimes, that also murder young gay men for exercising their human right to express their sexual person.

kallipolis, i didn't say I agreed or supported lashing as suitable punishment for anything. I actually said it was barbaric, however whether I think it is barbaric or not doesn't negate that it is a fairly standard form of punishment around the world.

To the best of my knowledge such barbaric practices, as lashing is an exception and not a fairly standard form of punishment around the world.

anyone received 30 lashes, that person should give 30 lashes to their judges as well so that the judges may learn how sexually excited the lashes be.

For the folks who think that is fair treatment for the
crime of smoking. It is also common practice in the
Muslim world to kill homosexuals.
Welcome to the benevolent and wonderful world of
Islam where forgiveness does not exist and in the
name of Allah people have no rights.

this should really be titled "Idiots, that smoke beware"

and how barbaric would bringing down an aircraft full of Innocent people due to the selfish stupidity of one person be sorry not to go the politically correct route on this but if its the law its the law end of so not a single drop of sympathy here.

NON SMOKERS BEWARE...This is a true story happened about a week before Christmas. I was sitting outside a mall waiting on a bench for a friend to meet me before going in.

A man came and stood beside the bench to smoke a cigarette.

Fine with me....no problem...it's a free country he bought and paid for them, they are his property and his health ...none of my business.

Ok, along comes a couple, male and female....She pulls her coat up over her mouth like she was getting ready to walk past some kind of lethal deadly drop dead gas.

The man makes a terrible mistake....as he walks past the smoker he reaches up and flicks the cig from the guys mouth...wrong,wrong wrong thing to do!!!!

The guy who was smoking grabs the little hot shot and punches his face about three times before you could say shit, then proceeds to break his two fingers he flicked the cig with.....shewwwww I heard the bones break.

The guy just walked off and said nothing. I got the hell outta there.

Following that logic, then gay men in certain countries should also know better instead of breaking the law. They also knew and know what punishment they would or will get.

I understand what you're saying...knowing what the consequences to his actions would be he still decided to break the law and refuse to abide. Yeah ok...it still doesn't make the punishment any less wrong.
