I won't name the country but its a catholic country.

^ Nope. A lesbian friend of mine who I met back in the late 70s moved to either Alabama or Georgia (I can't remember which) to marry a gay man. It was convenient for both of them. (His boyfriend lived there and so did my friend's girlfriend.) They eventually got a divorce and my friend came back to Peterborough with her girlfriend.

If his father is a priest, then he has no room to talk. Priests are celibate.

By the way....tell him that catholic priests don't 'own' churches. This is a bit of a giveaway here. It is clear that you really don't understand how the structure of the catholic church works. I can also say that in a Catholic country, it would be extraordinary for one priest to be managing four parishes unless he is at an administrative level versus being pastoral.

I think he is bullshitting you, but there are a number of countries where these kinds of matches are common.

The only christian churches with priests are Anglican or catholic. I doubt if there are four anglican parishes in Brazil, but it would be possible for an anglican priest to have charge over four parish churches I suppose.

To the crux of the story, though...marriages of convenience between lesbians and homos are certainly known in American, European, Indian, Chinese...well...just about every culture you can imagine. Sometimes with the knowledge of parents, but usually as a secret between husband and wife.

Is it certain that the dad is actually a priest and not some other kind of church official, something in the back office perhaps? I quite like his attitude. He seems to be comfortable with his son's sexuality but sees the need to pay lip service to the traditional expectations. There's nothing cowardly or hypocitical about it, not in a conservative Catholic country. Different story in London or Sydney. Like they say in the army, if you wear your cap at the right angle and salute the right people you can get away with anything.

That list of bonking popes makes me wonder if the celibacy of priests is something that's only taken seriously in modern times. Perhaps in ages past they treated it as a sort of role play game, with the priest acting the part of a celibate when he was doing the biz in church and then going home and shagging the bejazus out of his housekeeper.

Popes were historically been held to a different standard.

Many of them were really appointed as temporal leaders of the papal states and Holy Roman Empire....not as pastoral or spiritual leaders.

But current day priests having wives, mistresses and children would not be an accepted thing in the church. Even though it probably does happen.
