After much self examination, I recently discovered that I very well may have anal warts :( At first I thought I had hemorrhoids, but didnt really have any pain or bleeding, which is the most common side effect of hemorrhiods. In fact, I don't have any symptoms at all, aside from small bumps inside my anal sphincter.

Has anyone had this problem before? If so, how did you resolve it? I plan on going to the doctor tomorrow for a legitimate diagnosis.

When I got anal warts (condylomata) many years ago, they itched like hell. I don't know if that's a clinical sign, but it's best to have them looked at because the sooner you lose them, the better.

I went the podophyllin route a couple times which didn't work, so finally told them to put me under and just cut the damn things off and be done with it. That worked.

That was 20+ years ago, and I've often wondered about HPV and my risk of rectal cancer since then...

Just a couple thoughts....HPV causes genital warts in men...not usually anal warts. HPV is much more dangerous to women as it has been known to cause cervical cancer in women. The types of HPV that can cause genital warts are not the same as the types of HPV that can cause cancers.

It could very well be genital warts. But the thing is, they all are just on the inside of my anal sphincter. Nothing external. Maybe I just caught it very early? (Hopefully)

Update****

The doctor did confirm it was genital warts :( Fortunately, it is in the very early stages and I have an appointment to freeze them off in 3 days time. This was a huge wake up call for me that's for sure

Not to get off-topic but just to clarify something- HPV causes all warts- regardless of the body part or the gender of the person. There are different strains that area specialized to cause infection in specific body parts. The strains that affect the genitalia will affect the female genitals, the male genitals and the rectum and anus of both men and women.

Fortunately, the strains that cause warts are less likely to cause cancers, although most sexually active people may end up infected with multiple strains.

We're recommending immunization for men- preferably before they become sexually active. Immunization offers immunity to the common strains that cause cancers but it will not protect against the strains that cause genital warts. Exposure to HPV doesn't provide immunity in the same way that the HPV vaccine does.

I'm definitely not gonna be sexually active for a while after getting these, despite getting them removed tomorrow. But let's say someone who has genital warts has sex with someone who doesn't. What's the chance that person will contract it?

BFF, be sure to ask about any gauze they shove up there for packing or to control bleeding, etc.

Many years after I had the warts cut off I had a small fistula repaired.

They didn't give me much info on what to expect, so when I had my first bowel movement after the operation I started out by pulling on the gauze they stuck up there. And pulling -- and pulling. Must have been two yards packed up there! :D :D

PS Metamucil is your friend. Trust me on this...
