So how much would you spend on a bottle of bubbly?

Dom Perignon.
Providing one of your good friends (or all of them together) paid for it. After all, it is a big day for YOU, and you should not have to spring for it.

I've found Dom Perignon utterly not worth the money. I prefer Cristal, but then again, I like my champagne on the sweet side.

If you've never had good champagne, do yourself a favor - go to a wine merchant. No, not a liquor store that sells wine. A wine merchant that specializes in wine. Tell him (or her) that you're interested in a good bottle of champagne or sparkling wine (yes, there's a difference), and tell him your preferences as far as taste and price. They'll be happy to suggest something ideal.

Just note that good champagne is to be savored, not to get drunk off of. You can use other liquors for that. :)

Oh, upper limit? I think the most we've spent was $300 or so.

at least $120.... youre only 30 once... then you're old :p j/k

listen to Lex tho... as a fellow (underage, yet up and coming) wine snob- get something worth your while!

You're only 30 once, so go get the best bottle of champagne you can. Dom or Cristal are great, and worth the money, IF you love champagne! Otherwise, save your money for something else you want to splurge on. When i turned 21 i bought a bottle of Dom, and my brother bought me an ounce of BC Bud! Nothing like great champagne to get rid of cotton mouth. AND no hangover!

We call people that can spend that sort of money on a single bottle of beverage "filthy rich".
So I guess it depends on how close to being filthy rich you are.
For me, $5 is a good price; I have much better things to do with huge sums like $300.

$300.00 is usually the upper limit.

i'm not particularly partial to the bubbly

The answer in a nutshell!! IF you like champagne, than allow a wine merchant (yes, listen to Lex, the wise one) to guide you. If you can't tell a vintage year from wine vinegar why bother to spend money (I'm a needy charity, if you must spend)?? Get a great ale or beer, or whatever "joy juice" will please YOU &, yes, your friends. As far as only being 30 once, hell you'll be 40 or 50 only once & might need the cash for other things!! ..| Oh, congratulations on living so long! LOL

Yes, agreed. If you're not a champagne fan, and you don't have any interest in trying a really good one - you just want to "pop open a bottle of bubbly" - spend the $5. And open it after you've already had a few. No one will notice or care.

We are NOT filthy rich. We shower daily. :)

You can save youself a load of money and try some Prosecco. It's a sparlking wine from Italy, and has become one of my favorite wines.

Not much. I really don't know champagne and am definitely no connoiseur of anything. I'm basically thinking I wouldn't taste a world of difference between a $30 bottle and a $300 bottle.

No. A philistine, maybe, but not a heathen. :D

Champagne isn't for everyone. People shouldn't be forced to drink it just because "that's what you do", and they shouldn't feel compelled to shell over for a pricier one just because it's a special occasion. If you love 7-Up, serve that. :)

^ That's just the thing. In blind taste tests, both of those often do as well as the real thing, if not better.

All you're paying for with real Champagne is the name.

Like I said, I've had pricey champagne that I thought wasn't good at all. I've only found one or two pricey ones that I thought justified the expense.

But yes, most likely, we're being label whores and getting totally ripped off. But as homosexuals, it's apparently in the blood.

If I am buying the champagne it will be for someone else.
I do not like it personally, but I will be sociable at parties and
tip the glass and toast a friend, but if it is me, please buy a bottle
always blue with a naughty name from my families winery. If you are a good enough friend, you would know, and it will only cost you about 12 bucks American a bottle here for what we call a fifth.

Usually I prefer a red wine, for it is good for the health and my penis. I do not usually thing of whites as real wines.

This is the only bubbly you'll catch me buying these days:

I'm happy with the $5 bottle of André Spumante. I did buy a $150 bottle of Dom for a friend of mine when she got married, but I'm happy with the cheap stuff for myself! :D

ya i would pay almost 300$ for a bottle of crystal then again im ballin!

For the most part, you're right.

There are some decent American champagnes (I mean sparkling wine) from the Gruet Winery, in New Mexico (yes, I said New Mexico.) It's gotten some good press, recently and retails for about $20 - $25 a bottle. They have a Brut, Blanc de Noir and Demi Sec that are very tasty. And they also sell a good sparkling Rose.

The Aussies are making some good sparkling Shiraz wines, as well.
