  • Hi Guest - Did you know?

So... I got chickens.

I can't tell if there is an opening on the side or not. Do the chickens walk the plank? Is that the feed box sticking out the side. My impression is that depending which door you open they either go into the enclosed area or into the greater yard. Anyway, it is cool looking. How do you like having chickens? Are you hoping to get anything from them, like eggs, or are they pets?

^ there's an opening into the inside of the fenced in area. The idea is sometimes I can let them out and they disappear into the forest behind that privacy fence for the day and come back in the evening. They have been doing this everyday. At night I close that door in the 2nd floor so animal can't get in. When I go away or I forget to open up in the morning they can still walk around in the fenced area so they are not trapped in that coop.

If you look on the left side, there is a little room sticking out on the 2nd floor. That is where they lay the eggs. The top opens up for easy access to get the eggs.

Not to scare you, but the forest in a neighborhood is dangerous for them. In addition to the regular predators like coyotes, foxes, hawks, and owls, they are also vulnerable there to both domesticated and feral dogs. It may sound great to let them forage in the "wild," but you are increasing your risk of loss.

It is also possible the hens might nest away from the roost, and they might develop that clutch with their eggs being taken. Farmers find stray nests all the time.

So just raise them in that fenced area?

My big white dog likes lay near the chicken coop nowadays. Don't know if he is guarding them or waiting for the opportunity to have an all you can eat buffet :rotflmao:

That's the general idea. Farms had chicken yards.

You can let them out on the rest of your grounds under supervision when you're working. If you keep their wings clipped, there won't be any concern with them flying up to the fence or trees.

Came out this morning before I leave. Spotted this.

I'll bet their scent is going to attract snakes and other predators. You'll need to be all the more watchful.

Wow! that is fantastic. Did you know someone was expecting? I lost one of my girls over the weekend and now am caring for another one. I'm happy she is getting better. We have had chickens for years and really enjoy them. They are just pets but we sure love the fresh eggs.

Nah, had no idea those chicks were coming.

Last night I checked them out before going to bed. Those 2 chicks are still there. Hopefully nothing happens to them.

Sometimes, it's hard to sort them out . . .

I have him on ignore, so didn't see that comment until now. What's the snide about? I don't get it

I replaced the pic with a download to my hard drive, as it wasn't showing up in the link.

As for Medic1, I don't think that was snide, but just a reference to you having dogs and chicks. Dunno.
