Faye Dunaway really ramped it up for ths ole, which apparently helped derail her career. I don't see why - it doesn't exactly cry out or a toned-down, nuanced performance.

Discuss, well is it strange that that movie made you think of your own mother? I enjoyed it the first time I saw it, although it practically wrecked Faye Dunaway's career.

Sometimes an actress just reveals a little too much with a performance, and everybody says, whoops-a-daisy... Like Mary Tyler Moore in Ordinary People or Liz Taylor in Virginia Woolf.

Joan was strange in many many ways. Somewhere there's a photo of her enjoying a quiet evening at home with her last husband, and she has plastic covers on the furniture. And Kirk Douglas says that when he was just starting out, they went on a "publicity date", which didn't stop her from pretty much raping him in the foyer when they got back to her house.

this movie is number 1 with drag queens everywhere!! i think they watch this when they need "acting lessons"...!!!

as far as Dunaway's performance is concerned, i saw her episode of "Inside the Actor's Studio", and her comment was at director Frank Yablans stating that he "didn't know when to reel-in an actor's performance".

and, to the person who suggested that MTM overacted in "Ordinary People", i SMACK thee!!!! :grrr:

I wasn't saying she overacted, I'm saying suddenly people started thinking, maybe that's the real her.

I still don't understand why we should focus so much on the wire hanger

Mommie Dearest did for Joan Crawford's public image what What's Love Got to Do with It did for Ike Turner's.

^^^Agreed...Ike's past Sins followed him to the Grave and beyond....Many of his peers said he changed his life and his ways after Tina. She never forgave him and neither did a portion of the Public...

As for the Beautiful, Sexy & Legendary Faye Dunaway she rocked that performance in Mommie Dearest..Faye put every inch of her being into that role. Today she'd win an Oscar for that same performance.....Stand-up Comic Mo'nique gave a BREATHTAKING-performance similar to Dunaway in the movie Precious..Mo'nique was so Raw & Powerful she swept ALL the Awards on the National & International level...Critics called Mo'nique's portrayal of CRAZY Mom Mary Jones "the meanest & nastiest Mother in cinematic history that you end up feeling sorry for by the end of the movie"...The Academy awarded her on Oscar night with the Gold & a standing ovation....

The late Heath Ledger won his Oscar for playing a Nut Case because he wasn't afraid to play the role..Javier Bardem also took home the Oscar for his CRAZY turn in No Country for Old men.....Actors are Artists who LIVE to push the envelope..You can't be afraid to take on roles.....

So what Faye Dunaway did back in 1981 would be considered Triumphant Power-acting in 2012...The Critics did her dirty back-in-the-day.........

Mommie Dearest did not derail her career. She had already been in the business for 30 years prior, doing mostly just average stuff (except for Bonnie and Clyde which was her most acclaimed role.) No, producers have not been flocking to her for the best roles since Dearest, but they weren't either before that movie.

I don't think the issue was MTM's acting. The trouble was that the movie centered around the mother, and the book centered around the boy.

...And Kirk Douglas says that when he was just starting out, they went on a "publicity date", which didn't stop her from pretty much raping him in the foyer when they got back to her house.
You left out the bit that highlights her parenting skill - she duct-taped the kids into bed so they couldn't get up and wander into the foyer and be traumatized.

So I just finished watching "Mommie Dearest" for the first time ever. I feel so emotional right now and can't stop thinking about how much I love my mommy. I feel like such a momma's boy right now...

..discuss....

Wuvable Oaf, WOW!!! How did you manage to go by so many years and not having seen MD? I read the book (in 1979) when I was a kid and I went to the movie on opening day (in 1981).

G-Lexington, though I really love Faye Dunaway, however I never really kept up with her, but this is the first time I heard anyone say that her MD movie helped derail her career. I always thought it was the Hollywood "age thing" (i.e. where an actress turns 40, in many cases that is when their career goes downhill).

i recall reading reviews and articles for some time after that movie came out. People considered it trashy and frothy (which it was, just not in a fully bad way!), and people found her acting way over the top. I think this was the first place I read the phrase "she left no piece of scenery unchewed". But as I said, that's precisely what the movie called for. It was supposed to be trashy and loud and over-the-top. I recall one actress in Showgirls saying "Once I realized what kind of movie we were making, I decded on my new motivation - I want to play this so camp that drag queens will want to be this character for Halloween." And that's kind of how I thought of Faye's role. :)
