Just relax, drink and enjoy yourself. Don't try to act like nothing more, nothing less than yourself.

I don't think there's really a "way" to act in a bar. Different people act differently...but that's no different than anywhere else.

First night in a bar ?? Ahh, so young... *sigh*

How to behave ? First off, relax. It's no big deal, people go to bars for all sorts of reasons, but mostly to catch a buzz. Some are looking to get laid, some are there just to socialize, if it's a sports bar they are there to watch sports, (and get drunk and maybe laid, too ;))

But basically, all you have to do is order a drink and sit there and sip it.

The rest will unfold naturally as it should.

Enjoy.

(oh, and tip your bartender at least a dollar a drink, and flirt with him if he's cute...) :D

Go easy at first

then go for it later

that would allow you to be slightly sober if a cute guy decides to talk to you

I usually get something a bit bitter, because then I drink it slowly... ;)

Okay. tipping. If you are there early tip big to get good service throughout the night. flirt if he is cute. if you arent going to have money for tips the whole night tip big early and then dont worry about it. tipping a dollar a drink is good too.

Get a Long Island Iced Tea. And stick with it for the night. Ten drinks should do.

Listen to Kev. It's not a bar if Kev's not been in it. The same thing applies for "arse", really.

Is tipping the bartender an American thing? Nobody I know does it over here.

I always tipped my Canadian bartenders well.

They were usually surprised because Canadians are notorious lousy tippers.

Also, if you're drinking beer, use some moderation. Canadian beer is stronger than our US crap.

If it's a mixed drink, you may be OK, since most bars I went to there served them weak.

Also, if you're in Vancouver, have fun. Great city, wonderful clubs, fun guys!

I have another question. What sort of drinks should I get? I was thinking maybe Jaegerbombs.

I have an approach to that: ask one bartender what another does best. I've discovered some absolutely wonderful drinks that way... and also learned that a certain drink from bartender A may be good, the same drink from bartender B may be great, but from bartenders C through G, it's just a drink, nothing special.

I like to surprise bartenders, too; he'll ask, "What can I get you?" and I'll answer, "Red -- make me something red". I almost always get really good drinks that way.

Count your drinks and stop at two if you're unsure of your tolerance. Be observant. Clubs and bars can be great places to experiment with a different kind of look or style, but you need to assess the scene first to know what might work and what definitely will not. Relax and find a comfortable perch and soak it all in. Don't run wildly all over the place. Know where the exits are in case you have to haul ass out of there in a hurry. If they start fighting or shooting, don't hang around to watch.

Happy b-day...hope u had fun! and going to bars is not all that tough...just be yourself and everything will just come naturally! hope u had fun today(!)(!)(!)

So how'd it go?

At a bar, I always make the first tip generous and conspicuous. If I run a tab (that is, dear foxydemon, if I get more than one thing and pay for them all together at the end ;-) ) I usually tip 20%.

I worked as a bartender for a while (short while. when I was younger, I didn't know myself as well). they need the tips. as does everyone else who works there bringing you stuff (the bartenders and waitrons share their tips with others at the end of the night).
