Kinsey said 10 % way back in the 1940s and more recent studies apparently pin us down at about 1 %. Obviously the truth is somewhere in between.

Something about the way gay sites on the net function tells me it could well be much higher than the "Kinseyian" one tenth!

Wishful thinking?

Well then c'mon educate me!

Re: So just what proportion of the population are

No idea but this site seems to be the busiest straight or gay so far.

Re: So just what proportion of the population are

Kinsey was the only unbisaed study with a large enough data set to matter. His approach was correct and his data was accurate. Other studies use approaches such as "Have you only thought yourself attracted to the same sex always?' which gives the 1% figure. Kinseys break down of fantasy versus action was a more acurate way to measure actual sexuality.

Re: So just what proportion of the population are

if I recall, the Kinsey figure of 10% was based on "guys who report having sex with mainly guys for some period of time in their life." As such, it may overstate what mostly think of as "gay".

For some reason, the figure of 6% for guys who are really mostly homosexual most of the time sticks in my head as coming out of more than one recent study, but I haven't seen them in a while and I might be mistaken.

As AlinCanada points out, this is a notoriously difficult kind of thing to measure "accurately."

Re: So just what proportion of the population are

I think 6% is what most studies quote these days. But to be honest, I believe that many "straight" guys are more BI-sexual that they want to let on. I have run across many straight guys in my time who (though I never had proof) made my Gaydar buzz a bit. A few I have met seem to have that "something" brewing just below the surface that they are afraid to reveal to the public, OR EVEN to themselves. So, in actuality the actual percentage might be a bit higher than 10%.

Re: So just what proportion of the population are

Together with the bisexual folks - both open and closeted - we make up about half of the human population.

I thought it was obvious. ._.

Re: So just what proportion of the population are

Who can believe any of the numbers as everyone seems to have an agenda.

Suffice it to say that we are the best part of the population. ;)

Re: So just what proportion of the population are

I would go with 5-6% exclusively gay .. meaning they don't cross sides.

a 'some times" switcher I would go with 10-13% .. those that might switch hit a couple of times a year

and the 'I've done it a couple of time in my life and thats it" 25%

most likely just full of it.

Why does the truth have to be between Kinsey and recent studies? Both are conducted in a crazily biased world.

We won't know until everyone who's gay, feels free to come out... and by then, no-one will give a damn anyway.

Re: So just what proportion of the population are

I say that there are more of us out there than many might think.

My boyfriend who was very much in the closet when he joined this site did a member search on those who were totally out versus those who are in the closet or partially in the closet. These are the following numbers of how each member answered the question in their profile. I thought you might find it interesting.

1782 jubbers indicated that they were totally out

1059 jubbers indicated that no one knows that they're gay

356 jubbers indicated that they are out at home but in the closet at work

1389 jubbers indicated that only their friends know

We have almost 10,000 registered members and some 5414 jubbers didn't respond to this question. This isn't even counting the tens of thousands of lurkers who visit the site but never register.

Re: So just what proportion of the population are

it hink its way higher than it says, i think its denial

Re: So just what proportion of the population are

10-13 and 5-6% does not add up to 25%....sorry...math equation not correct!

He didn't mean them to -- read it again.

The figures I've been seeing lately run between 4% and 8% for exclusively homosexual, 2% to 5% for bisexual, and 5% to 30% for what I'll lump together as "willing to cross the line".

That would make between 11% and 43% of guys out there who might go home with a fun guy and get it on.

Re: So just what proportion of the population are

i never bought anything under 10%, unless we're talking exclusively gay and out of the closet type folks. if gays are only 2% of the population (LOL) why is there as much gay porn as straight porn?

Hi Eric!

Some of us don't answer questions that are multiple choice because the correct answer isn't there, and we'd rather be silent than lie.

Reading on JUB's forums, I've seen guys who are out at work... but in the closet at home; out at university, but in the closet at work and home; out to friends and family, but not work or school; even out when traveling but not in the home town!

And that's the problem with a lot of surveys -- people don't fit nicely into quickie categories.

To cite a sociology prof I had, "Any survey with less than 100 possible responses is wrong".

The only way to do this and get a good figure would be to use a population of one million people, taking polygraphs as they answered and paid $100 if the polygraph said they told the truth.
