You think we can convince them to stay open?

"When conservative activists James O'Keefe and Hannah Giles released tapes last fall purporting to show ACORN employees advising them on how to set up a child prostitution ring, it resulted in widespread praise for their intrepid journalism and a Congressional defunding of the anti-poverty group. But it is now becoming clear to all but their most fervent supporters that the O'Keefe "expose" was deliberately misleading.

"If you were a member of Congress and you voted to defund ACORN because of the outrage portrayed in these tapes," MSNBC's Rachel Maddow proclaimed on Tuesday, "you were had."

Most of what James O'Keefe suggested were on his edited tapes was totally distorted or just made up. Conservatives were anti-ACRON because they stood up for poor people...And those people will stop at nothing, including outright lies, to discredit an enemy.

Now that we know James O'Keefe is just another dirty trick-playing liar... can we please keep ACRON open?

from wiki

seems like they need $$$

they need a new image and PR team so they can get people, businesses and foundations to donate to them again

Very true.

It was certainly very frustrating for many of us who saw what was happening. Many conservatives were angry that a group had supported the democrats so effectively and gotten so many people registered to vote. They just wanted to take them out and they didn't care how they did it, even if it meant resorting to something like this.

Democrats and Republicans are the same in so many regards. If ACORN had been right-leaning, Democrats would have been happy to see ACORN fall.

That may be true.. but Republicans have all those huge Evangelical groups like Focus on the Family and The Family Research Counsel and all those other deceptively-named groups that are made to raise money to push a conservative agenda... and nobody has ever gone in with a hidden handicam, role playing and trying to get employees to say things so they can edit them together and discredit the whole organization.

I don't ever remember a dirty trick like the ACORN tapes ever being done before.

can you?

Jasun - you "forgot" to point out that the this in only in California -- not the other places where ACORN was caught.

Jerry Brown is running for governor, I believe, and could have used the "resources" that ACORN still has. ACORN has done some really crooked stuff -- stuffing ballot boxes in KC and STL for instance.

I really don't think they are gone - just regrouping. I don't think Democrats want to give up people who can vote more than once a day in one election.

ACORN stood up for poor people - maybe they did some good stuff -- I have no idea. The only thing I've ever read or seen was how the organizers got rich and voter scams they produced -- that alone is good enough to say goodbye to these crooks.

PS: Choose a more credible source next time rather than Rachel Maddow, you might get more serious responses.

you got a source for this?

The only thing I've ever read or seen was how the organizers got rich and voter scams they produced -- that alone is good enough to say goodbye to these crooks.

I only saw stuff about that on Fox "News." Not a real source for credible information.

OH... you're one of those.

Rachel Maddow is about as credible as new reporting gets.

2. So, if an ACORN employee is caught doing something (or saying something) that is illegal, why do we blame the ones who revealed this?[/I]

Oh, for sure... never blame the messenger.

If ACORN had done anything illegal I'd want to know about it. But most of what I've seen is either just fabrication or things like one idiot volunteer filling out the odd bogus voter registration for "Mickey Mouse" (which never would have been used anyway).

What was fabricated about the advice? Even edited, it still shows ACORN employees advising individuals to do blatantly illegal things. And just so you know, filling out voter registration cards using bogus names qualifies as voter fraud.

Regardless of what O'Keefe did, ACORN and its employees were still in the wrong, and that the 'ACORN thing' as you call it, was not all lies as you say. Not even Maddow or Raw Story contend that it was all lies; they're saying that parts of it were deliberately misleading and at the same time acknowledging that ACORN has had issues.

Congress unlawfully defunded ACORN for Mickey Mouse accusations (nothing proven in court). On the otherhand, Congress does not defund Haliburton and dozens of other corporate malfeasers, even after these corporate crooks are found guilty. See a double standard here?

Well except no... it doesn't show them advising individuals to do illegal things... that's the whole problem. The editing sure makes it look like that. And yes... filling out voter registration cards using bogus names is voter fraud but that was the act of a few volunteers who were in fact defrauding ACORN... not ACORN defrauding the government.

Of course there's a double standard, and I haven't claimed otherwise. HOWEVER, you can bet your ass that if it was a right-wing group in the same situation, they would have suffered the same consequences.

And you can claim it was unlawful, however the law itself does not support that premise.

Wrong. A federal court found that Congress illegally defunded Acorn and ordered their funding restored.

The law does not support the decision. If it ever makes its way to the supreme court, you will see the earlier decision reversed.

Jason - here's info on ACORN's illegal voting activities in Missouri.

I agree with others on here that Maddow, Beck, Obermann, Hannity -- all have agendas -- they are opinion based programs -- not news programs.

ACORN's full of liars and cheaters, and it's best they were shut down.

It's always interesting seeing who Obama loyalists defend.

They concept of ACORN is a good idea. There were lots of great people who worked there. However for an organization like that to succeed, they have to hire lots of freelance and part-time people who get paid per person they agree to sign up to vote. Unfortunately people lied on such forms to obtain funds they did not have. It needed a better HR department, not to be shut down.

The concept was good, but as with many things, they were corrupted by money and political influence. Had they remained non-partisan they would have survived the mess.
