So, what do you guys think about the possible mosque by ground zero

This seems like a touchy political topic that has the potential to spark some heated arguments. I wish there was a separate subforum where these threads could be posted, so as to not poison the environment of Hot Topics.

there is a forum, its called ce and p.
but some topics do deserve more attention. i dont think this is one of them.

100% I will support they open BIG gay bar in front of the mosque if this happen

why? just to piss people off? bigotry and anti-homosexuality exist in almost all organised religion. it's a place of worship, people...nothing more

live and let live, i say.

Are Muslims in NY killing gay people?

Or you could open one in Christian Uganda.

It's terrible. How incredibly insensitive. I'm boycotting it.

I hope you will also join me in boycotting the following Japanese Restaurants built near Pearl Harbour:
Gyotaku Japanese Restaurant
Kozo Sushi Pearlridge
Kunio Restaurant
Genki Sushi USA Inc

Sushi restaurants!?!? At Pearl Harbour? Totally inappropriate. Sushi should be called "freedom fish."

This is a good point.

I bet that in 1950, this would have been very controversial. Now, time has moved on, and people, society and cultures have changed. It has become an issue of the past with the succeeding generations.

People who are upset that a mosque could be so close to WTC after 9/11 are shockingly not upset that White men in their 20's are still walking around Oklahoma City after McVeigh's bombing

This is also a good point.

I wonder what the Tea Party followers think about Timothy McVeigh and the Oklahoma City bombing?

Excellent idea! I bet you it would prove more controversial than the mosque. Religions (Christianity and Islam) which support hatred on their fringes are NOTHING compared to the awfulness of guys loving guys, you know.

An issue which is too often ignored and forgotten about. Although to be fair, Muslims over there are quite different from those in Europe. Let's just say in conclusion that an American mosque will be MUCH less controversial than a British mosque.

Not all Moslems are terrorists, but the terrorists responsible for 9-11 were all Moslems.
I feel it would be a great dishonor to the families and friends of those killed that day.
My attitude might change when I see a Cathedral and a synagogue in Mecca, or even if the proposed construction included areas of worship for other faiths and a large interdemonational area.
Even a dedication on the entrance of the new mosque stating something to the effect that "This building is a monument to moderate Moslems condeming the actions of a misguided minority resposible for the horror of September 11, 2001".

not yet but some day they will kill you too when Muslim can domination USA (!)

Whether it's extremist Christians or Muslims, I'm in danger. In fact I'm sure more gays have been assaulted and killed by Christians for being gay than by Muslims.

But this is just an Islamic community center, used by some of the many Muslims already living in the US and not "dominating" it. They are no more killing me than the people using the closest Catholic church.

Many Muslims were also killed that day. Flying planes into buildings was an act of Political Terror, not an act of Islam! The events of that terrible day were not an act of Faith, but, rather, a very misguided act of "faith" in the goals of Al Quaeda, not Islam!

It's important that we make, and keep in mind, that differentiation.

Keep smilin'!!(*8*)
Chaz ;)

Mecca?

Why are you equating how things are done in the US - a secular nation with religious freedom - to a specifically Islamic destination?

There is a legal term, "reciprocity" and an even older adage "do as I say and not as I do".
Based upon news articles, TV etc, Moslems adhere to neither concept.
"It's their way or the highway".
There are mosques in Israel and Rome, both of which are considered Holy places by other religious (more tolerant) people).

Rome is a nation and Israel a nation with secular governments. Mecca is in an Islamic nation, most analogous to Vatican City which, incidentally, does not have a mosque.

The United States has a secular government and freedom of religion, though that point seems lost on you. People are free to build mosques, cathedrals, temples and other houses of worship.

There's no reason to think the Muslims in NYC have any more power over Mecca or any Islamic nation than you do.

why close-by and not farther?

it's about sensitivity. 9/11 wasn't that long ago. it takes time. can't compare to japan/pearl harbor (50 yrs).

although it was't a muslim thing, they did it because if their faith in muslim. that's what people are afraid of.

***wonders if the 9/11 hijackers had been christians of euro descent (and if you think such an event is unlikely, revisit your 6th grade history textbook) if people would oppose the construction of a church a few blocks away from ground zero today***

This isn't about anything other than those "foreign brown people praying to a different God than ours", that sentiment has been boiling in this country for years but dishonest Americans needed an excuse to purge these feelings.

^If there were a proposed Jewish community center at the same site, we wouldn't expect them to set aside spaces for other religions. Why should we expect that of a Muslim community center? We don't force people of other religions to prove that their intentions are peaceful; why single out Muslims?

There's nothing insensitive about building a Muslim community center in New York, and the proximity to Ground Zero is being needlessly hyped by the islamophobic Right. Let the people build their community center and let them live their lives peacefully.

I know. My post was sarcastic. People keep posting this political crap in the wrong forum, and none of the mods see fit to move it.

Just because they CAN build it there, doesn't mean they should.
