Soccer World Cup 2010

Football + South Africa = brilliant idea.

Here we are half way through S. Korea vs Greece and blackbeltninja is right on target... S.Korea 1 - 0 Greece.

Greece have looked unsure of themselves, confused.

Oh! Jisung has just taken advantage of another mistake by Greece.

S.Korea 2 - 0 Greece [52']

Also, the announcers said that about 5% of tickets to matches were unsold. The stadium in this match has a lot of empty seats.

^Port Elizabeth is the 4th biggest city in .za behind Joburg/Pretoria (a sprawling mass these days), Cape Town and Durban, but even then it is tiny and there isn't much near it to generate critical mass. The stadium is probably a little too big for their purposes, really.

Full time:

S. Korea 2 - 0 Greece

Prediction: I'll offer 2-0 to Korea.
Right on! ..|

2 words - Lionel Messi.

Add a combative and flamboyant personality to the mix in the from of one Diego Maradona and you'll either see the most unbelievable display ever in the history of ever, or the most disjointed jumble you're ever likely to set eyes upon.

Argentina 3-0 Nigeria
You've hit the nail on the head with your analysis.

Will Argentina be a juggernaut and roll over all opposition?

Or is Argentina a tour group of football stars on a disorganized, do-it-yourself holiday in South Africa?

I don't know enough about Nigeria to have an informed opinion about them. All I know is what I read in the occasional article on ESPN Soccernet, Yahoo Sports or FoxSports.com, so I will take your prediction.

JakeLucas did a great synopsis for England-USA yesterday. I will call England 3-1 USA.

Thanks, "-d-"!

We Americans come from every nation on Earth, but if we have any "national characteristics" they would be eternal optimism and a never-say-die attitude. ;)

My head tells me your prediction for England vs USA will probably be right, but my heart says England 2 - 2 USA.

Team USA have grown and matured since the last World Cup and several of our players have been playing in Europe, gaining valuable top-flight experience. Landon Donovan and Clint Dempsey may have a couple of surprises in store for the Three Lions. ;)

Tim Howard is arguably one of the best goalies in football right now. But is USA's defense up to the task of stopping Rooney and Gerrard? We shall see... we shall see.

I hear the national anthems playing.... back to the television. :gogirl:

w0w! Already! In the 6th minute!

A beautiful header from Heinze! :=D:

Albiceleste 1 - 0 Super Eagles

Didn't want to miss a minute of the World Cup, so I cut the post short to get back to the telly.

What I left out was a "weakness" for the USA.

Team USA's "scrappy," physical, go-get-'em-boys style of play may work quite well against England's somewhat rough-and-tumble style, but there is a danger that if USA get a couple of yellow cards, or heaven forbid, a red card, it might cause them to pull back, and then it could be "Katie, bar the door!".

If Maradona is inclined to take my advice, he will put in Martín Palermo in the second half, because....

... because....

... just "because." ;)

A good match!

Nigeria played quite well. Their defense stood up to the mighty Argentine offense.

And Vincent Enyeama certainly earned his pay (and a lot of respect) today. :=D:

In college I had 4 Nigerian teammates and was always impressed by their skill, speed and strength. :)

It was a bit strange at times. Watching the match was a little like watching a Serie A "All-Star" match.

The day, the hour, the moment we here in the U.S. have been anticipating for months is almost here. :D

England vs USA

Will there be another "Miracle on Grass"? Probably not. But... we are eternal optimists. :)

Nick Webster at FoxSports.com had a good column the other day. He looked at the England vs USA match from a "man-to-man" point of view. He broke it down to compilation of "head-to-head" matchups.

Nick says:
Many people think Saturday's match between the U.S. and England in Rustenburg is a classic David vs. Goliath confrontation.

England is the bookmakers' overwhelming favorite against the spunky underdog U.S. On paper, the bookmakers are right and there should be only one winner, but this is the World Cup. This is not some fantasy game and the pressure is all on the Three Lions.
He continues:
Let's now delve into the starting XI's and find out exactly how they stack up head-to head.
Goalkeeper: David James vs. Tim Howard - Advantage USA

Right Back: Glen Johnson vs. Steve Cherundolo – Advantage USA

Left Back: Ashley Cole vs. Carlos Bocanegra – Advantage England

Right Center Back: Jamie Carragher vs. Jay Demerit
Advantage England

Left Center Back: John Terry vs. Oguchi Onyewu – Advantage England

Right Midfield: Aaron Lennon vs. Clint Dempsey – Advantage USA

Left Midfield: Joe Cole vs. Landon Donovan - Advantage USA

Center Midfield: Frank Lampard vs. Jose Francisco Torres – Advantage England

Center Midfield: Steven Gerrard vs. Michael Bradley – Advantage England

Center Forward: Peter Crouch vs. Edson Buddle – Advantage USA

Center Forward: Wayne Rooney vs. Jozy Altidore – Advantage England

Coaches: Fabio Capello vs. Bob Bradley – Advantage England

And now if I may be permitted a moment (or two) of pure, unadulterated, completely biased, team-and-country pride... :gogirl:

I usually love Steven Gerrard, except when he's playing against Arsenal or USA.

Especially not today.

And I hate to take a point the way USA did, but I do have to say....

GOOOOAALL, USA!! (!)

Poor Robert Green won't sleep well tonight. ;)

Half time in Rustenburg...

England 1 - 1 USA

Yeah, the England goalkeeper Green made a howler and let the ball slip through his hands into the net. #-o

I actually feel sorry for him - you KNOW the British tabloids are going to have their knives out, right?

It would be difficult enough for him WITHOUT having to deal with the usual hoardes of populist anger.

I still tip both England and the USA for progressing to the next stage. ..|

Full time: England 1 - 1 USA

Great match! :=D:

Well....

Been waiting 188 days for this match. I am quite satisfied with the result. :)

My questions about the fitness of Oguchi Onyewu and Carlos Bocanegra were answered. Both seem to be fit as a fiddle.

USA did not have to pull back on their style of play due to discipline problems.

This was not the Gerrard and Rooney Show tonight. :D

Got quite a scare when I saw Tim Howard injured on the pitch. Looked for a moment like he was clutching his arm. But it was just (!) cleats to his chest.

Seeing that Green was in goal instead of David James, I thought, "that's a bit of hubris from Fabio Capello." Turned out just fine. :p

Oh, and Steven Gerrard is off my Christmas list.

Good job USA !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I m glad it was a tie
