Social Networking Can Lead to Depression?

No, I don't it's right, I would say it's not entirely accurate. Too much of anything could be a problem.

'Social Networks' aren't making you become more isolated, spending 6 hours on the computer a day is. The site itself doesn't force you to go to it and not leave. My problem with this is that it takes away the problem that probably exists in the person, not a website.

I wonder what these people would be doing with those 6 hours without [STRIKE]facebook[/STRIKE] a computer. There are plenty of other things they could use to isolate themselves. And who says that there aren't people who do have real life friends and don't spend this much time on facebook don't feel lonely and isolated?

I agree I think the news dumbed down this study for viewers and I wish your points were included in their sound bites.

Very good and logical points.:=D:

I still contend that facebook, twitter, and the like will be the downfall of socialised civilisation. I think it will breed socially retarded generations.

I heard about this before. I agree with Mikami in that it's mostly due to the amount of time people spend on these sites versus doing things. Also though when it comes to things like Facebook and Twitter at least for my age group people seem to post pics of themselves going out to parties and tweeting about their exciting lives which I can totally see how some people can become depressed wishing they were leading the same lives. Kind of sad really.

Crazy idea but.....lets shut down the computers and go outside, hang out, play a game/sport, talk face to face. Get to know reality instead of an induced state of constant marketing through airbrushed pretty people whilst you sit on your ever increasingly fat ass. x

ANother problem with facebook. Everyone will always have more friends, more memories and good times, more everything than you will.
Or so it will seem after you spend enough time on there.

It's funny when you read these correlations with increase internet usage and depression. I guess just posting these things (tweets/status updates, pictures, blogs) hits the pleasure center as much as receiving comments, notifications, and even text messages on the cellphone.

I admit that when MySpace was the cool site, I would post a million bulletins per second, but after awhile I realized how ridiculous I looked. I don't know. Some people don't go too deeply in their tweets/updates. Most just say something like, "Eating eggs," then "going to the bathroom," and then, "gettin' some." Most people don't really care about these updates, yet most people just postpostpost like there's no tomorrow.

*gasp*

Go... out...side...? You jest.

I think, also, that the TV and computers are leading to child obesity. When I was young, I got home from school, got on my bike, and went out in the woods with friends and got dirty and had fun.

Now, instead of these kids getting together and doing ANYTHING, they sit on the computer and type to one another. It's a shame, really.

I blame the parents.

I think you've touched on a critical aspect: it stirs up the obsessive/compulsive in people, hooking into the need to feel connected and the need to feel accomplishment. The "connected" part is obvious; if your page shows you have a hundred friends, you feel connected. The accomplishment part is subtler, but I've read studies that show that when people send an email or post a notice, they feel like they've accomplished something.

Those easily flip into a "have to" space, where keeping up with the online social stuff becomes a need -- an obsession and compulsion. And the more obsessive-compulsive someone becomes, the less social he'll tend to be.

The depression comes because the connections and the accomplishment aren't real, they're ephemeral. Stop, and they wither fast. And people can feel the unreality of it.

Doesn't everything lead to depression these days? Like eating, rejection, working, watching TV, drinking, and maybe even breathing (not sure if they did a study on the last one yet.

QFTFT

It gets really tiresome when they say everything leads to depression. While it is true and probably fact...that everything leads to depression. It seems a new study or research each day.

Sometimes it can be just the opposite with these online sites such as chat rooms, social networks, and forums. Yes, for someone who lives indoors and never does much but stay online and talk to online friends instead of people in real life. That can be depressing.

But to those who are constantly active and work a lot or find things to do. Let's just call it being busy. Sometimes there isn't a better way to relax, unwind ,vent, or release (not sexually kay...) than going to a forum or chat room and talking with people who you don't even know or do knows. And sometimes reading about what's going on in other people's lives, find how people relate to you or are different than you, or just seeing what everyone's up to. It can make you feel better sometimes or help you relax or think.

But really I just want them to say "Study shows that everything in this world leads to depression". Because that would probably be 100% fact.
