Was sodoma punished estrictly because of homosexuality?
Or was it a misinterpretation?

I'm clearly ignorant on the subject.

No. It went way way way past homosexuality--- people were doing elderly members of thier own family and all kinds of very unpleasant things.

No. It (along with Gomorrah) were destroyed because God could not find even ten righteous people in them. Soon before that, Lot has two strangers staying with him, and the town roughs ask Lot to send them out so they can "know" them (in the Biblical sense). Lot refuses and offers to send out his virgin daughters instead. The ruffians say "fuck that shit" and try to enter by force, at which point the strangers reveal that they're actually angels, and blind the ruffians. Then they help Lot escape before destroying the city, Lot's wife peeks back, turns to salt, etc.

It had less to do with homosexuality, and more to do with the hospitality of strangers and rape. But people will read what they want to.

All the attention on the Lot story is focused on the destruction of S&G. The end of the story sees Lot fleeing into the mountains with his two daughters. The said daughters ply their father with drink and have sex with him, so Lot's children are his grandchildren, and God is fine with incest and rape, so long as it's in the family and it begets children.

The sins of Sodom were many, most people know the Genesis account of Lot but that just the end of the story. The Bible covers Sodom's sins in many other places and the primary sin of the people of Sodom was the lack of hospitality, being uncharitable and abusive to their fellow man and turning away from God. They treated the old and poor badly and was evil to strangers. They engaged in pagan practices.

But even focusing on the common belief that homosexuality was 'the' issue one has to consider that most of the crowd that confronted Lot and the Angels were not Homosexuals (based on what we now know of today of sexual orientation) and Lot would surely not have offered his virgin daughters to crowd of homosexuals as a consolation. However, homosexual rape by heterosexuals was as done in that time period as a means of humiliating a prisoner. The crowd obviously intended to determine who these strangers were and perhaps use them in such a manner. The wording 'to know' them that was used could have been sexual in context but the same word in Hebrew could mean 'to know' as in to get to know about them. The same word confusing arises in the gender of the crowd, the wording used was more commonly used to refer to a mixed gender crowd. If you take the common belief that this crowd intended to use the Angels in a sexual manner, the real sin here is attempted rape which is wrong whether you are homosexual or a heterosexual.
