I think that one of my favorite periods to learn about in history is the French Revolution. After going to France and actually seeing the sights and seeing such movies like the Affair of the Necklace really interests me about how ppl lived back then. I was really excited to see a trailer last year of a new Sofia Coppola film about Marie Antoinette. After waiting for the damn movie to come out it is finally almost here 10/20/06 and trailers are being shown on TV now. This is the link to the official site and the new trailer. You guys should check it out it looks pretty good. Anyone else interested in seeing it?

I was surprised to learn Marie Antoinette was Queen Isabella of Castille's daughter (I think) or was it Catherine Medici's daughter?

I absolutely plan to see it. I thought Lost in Translation was one of the worst movies I have ever seen, but this one has much more going for it.
 
She was the daughter of Maria-Theresa of Austria and the sister of the Emperor Joseph (Mozart's sometimes patron).
 
Well, I plan to see it because I've heard that's a good movie because it's Sofia sees herself in Marie Antoinette. Sofia sees herself as this rich girl who the public thought was a joke, but in the end she really had talent. When you think of the movie from that perspective then the movie works. I've heard Kirsten Dunst say that the movie more a history of feelings than a history of facts. So it should be interesting. For one thing I know, the decision to play the New Order songs during the trailers is genius. The anachronism of the punk music mixed with a movie about the 18th Century is ingenius.

Actually it was Empress Maria Theressa Hapsburg of Austria

I agree "Age Of Consent" was a good pick. Thats why I liked the first trailer so much.
 
I love the trailer that uses "Plainsong" by the Cure, in addition to the longer trailers that play the New Order version of "Ceremony" from their former band Joy Divison. The Soundtrack comes out tomorrow. You guys should check out "Fools Rush In" by Bow Wow Wow; there's a snippet on the sony the site.

PS, I personally loved "Lost In Translation." Yeah, it had a rather melancholy overtone, but, to me, it sends a message that we spend too much time on what we think is best for us rather than what IS best for us.
 
I'm so excited to see this movie! Too bad it comes out the same day as The Prestige:(

I like how there aren't any contrived accents in the movie (I don't think Kirsten Dunst is capable of pulling off a French accent, so good for everybody).

Is there another band that sings "Ceremony" because I thought that Ian Curtis was supposed to record "Ceremony," but he died before could, so Bernard recorded it. I love Ian Curtis, his voice conveyed a lot about him. It just has this somber, haunted tone to it.

And I love "Lost in Translation" as well. Scarlet was at her best. She's made some questionable film choices, and I don't think she's been as good as she can be. I just hope she doesn't do another "the Island." Oh yeah, speaking of Sofia Coppola, I plan to rent "The Virgin Suicides," because that seems like a cool ass movie. ;)

This movie looks gorgeous. All the shots I've seen are so damn pretty. I can see this easily winning Best Costume Design at the Oscars.

Anyway, I love the trailer. Especially the shot of her in the balcony bowing to the crowd.
 
I look forward to the movie. I love European history, especially the 17th through the 19th Century.
I do hope the movie has some historical accuracy though.

Thats my favorite too. I learned in a lecture that the peasants raided Versailled the first time and planned on killing her, and the Queen came out to the balcony above them and addressed them. At the end of her speech they cried "Longe vie la rehine" (sorry about my spelling) "Long live the Queen" it was even said that she gave food (bread) to them all out of the Royal food pantry. Sadly by the end of the lecture I also learned that they hated her so much that they dulled the blade on the Guilliotine so it fell on her neck 7 times before it took off her head. :eek:

I will def let you know what I thought about it. I will be ther opening night and I hope some of you will too!
 
Ryze, I'm really interested aswell. That period of french history is my favourite area of non-contemporary history also. I can't wait to see the film for its lavish costumes and designs, but mostly because I am fascinated with seeing stories of falling from grace. To see such an austentatious symbol of french beauty and decadence be torn down so dramatically. Although from what I gather, the film does not focus much on the revolution itself.
I loved the Annie Lebowitz photoshoot for Vogue of the Marie Antoinette film at Versailles and it looked fantastic.

Hey, bpb. Bernard did do the final version of the "Ceremony," however, in 1995 a box set called "Heart and Soul" included a demo version with Ian Curtis singing, hence the whole New Order covering Joy Division thang. Sorry for the confusion...big Ian fan myself.

I just saw "The Island" on cable and couldn't help but wonder why she and Ewan Mcgregor took part in something so shotty. The "The Virgin Suicides" is pretty good, if you haven't read the book, otherwise it's a bit of a let down. Soundtrack again on that one was great, too. Usually IFC or Sundance channel shows a short by Sofia Coppola called "Lick The Stars" (I think that's what it's called). It's definitely something to catch to see how far she's come as a writer and director.

Oh so Ian did record a version! I wish I could hear that. I love hearing demos. I got this cd full of A-Ha demos that came with a biography about A-Ha. The songs are so different and raw. So I'm assuming Ian sounds the best on "Ceremony" compared to Bernard. ;)

I have the demo version on a tape a friend of mine made for me many years ago (yes, tape, and I own a walkman, too ;) ). Bernard basically imitates Ian's vocal, which was much heavier, therefore being, of course, the better vocal. You could try some p2p sites, but they're only passing off a remastered/remixed version of the New Order "cover" which strips most of the reverb from the track as the JD version. But the Joy Division box set is called "Heart and Soul"; its about 60 bucks over at Amazon...I've never seen it at a store, which is odd.

A-Ha...Is there a demo version of "I've Been Losing You"? One of my favorites.
