Some racists are the nicest people you've ever met

I worked for an older couple who would sit on their couch watching Fox News while sputtering foul, racist comments. Whenever the laundry guy, a black man, came by to pick up their laundry they'd chat him up all super friendly like and give him a Snapple. I've seen this behavior other times as well. So, yeah.
Nevertheless, I find it difficult to believe your neighbors wife said that. It sounds like bad dialogue from a TV show
This is VERY close to an extremely hateful neighbor I had who was constantly raving about blacks. She had worked for AT&T, or one of the Baby Bells in Dallas/Ft. Worth for years, and apparently had grievances about affirmative action and "unfair" treatment at her job for all those years.

She dyed her hair a brilliant red, but her temper was so hot, you'd have thought it was real.

At the time, Bill Clinton sat in the White House, and she'd repeatedly turn the conversation to politics and start ranting about it and expect me to counter since I had supported him, but it was not my calling to be her whipping boy for the Democrats. The odd thing was, she considered herself refined, had the house done up well above most in the neighborhood, and spoiled her brood of pubs and Cavalier King Charles Terriers. She decorated her walls with some collector's series of china plate with scenes printed from Gone With The Wind.

But, as I've posted before, she called her pugs back immediately and chided them and apologized profusely to an elderly black lady walking by on tthe sidewalk. I called her on it afterwards, and she really couldn't explain why she professed one thing and behaved opposite.

My armchair analysis would say she cherished her scapegoat socially and polititcally, but she wasn't full of hate for people, but for "other", much as the Nazi's proposed to keep the Slavs beyond the mountains as perpetual enemies to keep the Germans unified.

As for why I tried to remain her friend for those years, I don't think of people quite that way as "nice" or not nice. Either we socialize, or we don't, and you have to overlook flaws in almost everyone, some big, some small. And, decades of discipleship have taught that we have to reach people where they are, not wait for them to be perfect. You'll have no influence over them at all if you cut off your neighbors altogether.

That said, she died alone and friendless.

I don't see why you can't be at least courteous to people who hold different views to yourself.
Here in the UK we had lots of examples of families split apart because one person voted for Brexit while another voted against.
A friend and I were on opposite sides of that vote but it didn't affect our friendship
Seems like you kind of totally missed the point, but okay.

I've often viewed you as the left group, this is the closest you've ever sounded to being in the middle

@ chatting with the laundry guy

Identifying character flaws gets a lot trickier when money/services are involved.

We can only hope that it's only the laundry that will be taken to the cleaners. And, of course, we don't want our names included when they post pictures of our skid marks on social media.

Right or wrong, sometimes, a little dishonest ass kissing of people we really don't care for is our only salvation.

The shore areas in New Jersey have some hints of racism. I worked at a hospital out there, and sometimes you could tell the older people there were racist, or I had two young kids point out I was black, and the parents apologized. I was told by some people to avoid some areas because they were racist.

I've been saying this for years. If they have trouble saying out loud obvious facts and think it is something to be avoided...

Like for example, some people still have trouble saying the g word. Gay, being such a devastatingly bad thing to be, has to be avoided and any mention of it is an abomination. So, even though they are nice and polite to you, they have trouble saying the g word in your presence just like how people avoid saying the word leprosy.

I still maintain that people who have trouble recognizing someone's race is secretly racist. Why? Because they think there's something awfully wrong with being black or Asian or whatever else so they avoid mentioning it. In their heads, they think they are being polite by not mentioning your "disability" aka race, sexual orientation, or whatever else it is about you they are afraid to recognize.

I think you're going to get a lot of flak for describing race and sexual orientation as disabilities, quotation marks or not.

On the race point, it's usually pretty obvious when you meet someone what their race is. Not commenting on it is not a sign of racism or whatever, but usually it's simply because the person's race is irrelevant.

^ At this point in the thread it hardly matters that the OP sees race or sexual orientation as disabilities.:rotflmao::rotflmao::rotflmao::rotflmao::rotflmao::rotflmao:

It is already a fucking dumpster fire.

Or simply anything you say regarding race can be misconstrued by those who assume the worst instead of are able to discuss areas that are sensitive. And, if you're White, or Chinese, or other groups known to be racist within their ranks, you're guilty before tried in many minds.

No no no let's keep it going. Maybe the flames will spread to the fictitious tenant thread.

If you sit quietly you can hear the usual suspects patting themselves on the back and congratulating themselves for their perceived slam dunks. The smugness used to be annoying but now I find it rather.... quaint?
