In my thirty plus years on this planet I’ve heard some great sad love songs, over the weekend my buddy brought over a CD of the late Harry Chapin’s music. I was never a fan of folk music but last night, I decided to play his CD while working on my acrylic painting, I played “Taxi” this song was about two young lovers who meet up later in life in a taxi and they reminisce on what happened in their lives. It was a sad story and silly me, I starting tearing up half way through the 6 minute song.

What is your favorite sad love song(s)?

"This Woman's Work" by Kate Bush - not a lovesong but a real tear-jerker:cry:

"Goodbye My Lover" by James Blunt.

I also cry whenever I hear Mariah Carey sing, but not for any emotional reasons, just the pain it induces on my ear-drums.

Song for a friend, Jason Mraz-great song and yeah-I rarely listen all the way through without a tear...

I also agree with marcde-mariah makes me cry in pain.

Agree with Marcde on "This Woman's Work" and Mariah's enough to make anyone cry. Sorry to sound really gay but Bette Midler's The Rose always gets me. Also Tell Me It's Not True from the musical Blood Brothers.

Another song I heard on Harry Chapin's CD was his hit single "Cats in a cradle" this man was an amazing songwriter, Like Karen Carpenter he died too soon,

"Cats In A Cradle" was about a father and son relationship, even though the father was away alot with his work, the son who wanted to spend time with his dad still wished to emulate his father when he grew up. :(

"Taps" does it to me every time. It was played at my Dad's funeral.

For some reason the song "Still Loving YOu" by the Scorpions (I think) comes to mind!

The DJ Sammy version of "Heaven" for some reason does bring a tear to my eye sometimes....but it's not sad.

Celine Dion's "If I Were You" does it too.

And though this isn't a song, Chopin's piano concertos bring tears to my eyes and get them rolling. I cried for 40 min almost non-stop the last time I listened to one of them.

I think I cry more to happy, sweet songs. In the case of Chopin, it's often this kind of happiness with hints of melancholy.

Sarah Mclachlan - Full of grace
Michelle Branch - Goodbye to you

One that probably not many will be familiar with is Sometimes It Snows in April by Prince. It's from the soundtrack to Under The Cherry Moon (which was a crap movie but had a great soundtrack). It's about the loss of a best friend.

I dunno but I'm sorta in the punk/emo music right now and Red Jumpsuit Apparatus has a song on their album called "Your Guardian Angel" which i think deserves some credit.

"Embrace Me, You Child" by Carly Simon

It's about Carly's real life fear of her father, she thought he considered her the ugly duckling and least talented of his daughters and that she would never measure up. She developed a stammer due to this fear, and she conquered it by singing her words instead of speaking.
