Soooo Angry Over Dadt

Seriously? No offence to anyone, and I say that because I do not write this to flame, but simply to provide my opinion on the matter

I see this fight as somewhat pointless. The military has never outright said “We don’t want homos” That’s simply an interpretation of DADT that we’ve chosen to latch on to. The policy is to not ask, and to not tell period. Under the rules of DADT it is true that you are not allowed to tell your other officers that your gay, however you also cannot tell them you aren’t gay. You are supposed to be a soldier. One of many. You’re there to do your job. Your meant to put your life on the line for your country, and be a killing machine when needed. The reason this has become an issue is because there are more and more out gay people, and for some reason we’ve decided that we want our sexual/social/personal lives all tossed in with our professional. The only reason people assume it means the same as “No Homo” is because the majority of people are straight… which means that the assumed sexuality is straight. Its our own subconscious awareness of this assumed heterosexuality that causes us to misconstrue the meaning.

I am for DADT, because I don’t find it wise to have a military force split in two: Gay Soldiers and Straight Soldiers. No. I think a much more effective force is one unified Military: Soldiers. Nothing more, and nothing less. They are all the same. They’re there, they’re doing their job, that’s all anyone else there needs to know.

Besides, there’s much more important things we could fight for first.

My 2 cents.

A member of the armed forces shall be separated from the armed forces under regulations prescribed by the Secretary of Defense if one or more of the following findings is made and approved in accordance with procedures set forth in such regulations:
(1) That the member has engaged in, attempted to engage in, or solicited another to engage in a homosexual act or acts unless there are further findings, made and approved in accordance with procedures set forth in such regulations, that the member has demonstrated that—
(A) such conduct is a departure from the member’s usual and customary behavior;
(B) such conduct, under all the circumstances, is unlikely to recur;
(C) such conduct was not accomplished by use of force, coercion, or intimidation;
(D) under the particular circumstances of the case, the member’s continued presence in the armed forces is consistent with the interests of the armed forces in proper discipline, good order, and morale; and
(E) the member does not have a propensity or intent to engage in homosexual acts.

i'll get the no bullshit true policy when i have time but right now i have to go into work (on base)

All of you that feel as if everything is okay the way it is, your entitled to your opinions.. however your wrong, its discrimination and it needs to stop! Read up on the tuskegee airman and hopefully you will see the similarities.. Its sad that the U.S, the better than though country can't get it together

The military has never outright said “We don’t want homos”

On the contrary. Prior to DADT, we were specifically asked on the application forms whether or not we had homosexual attractions. If you checked the "Yes" box, you didn't get in.

DADT was a compromise. In the 1990s, Bill Clinton thought gays should be allowed to serve but that was too radical a suggestion for the time. The compromise was just to stop asking recruits, and insist that we keep our queerness to ourselves.

The reason this has become an issue is because there are more and more out gay people, and for some reason we’ve decided that we want our sexual/social/personal lives all tossed in with our professional.

In case you haven't noticed everyone's "sexual/social/personal" life is tossed in with his professional, and always has been. Have you ever had a job where you were not permitted to talk about your family, your relationships, and everything important to you?

I don't get it. That's why we want DADT repealed. So that there will just be soldiers. Not straight soldiers and secret homos, just soldiers. DADT splits the military into separate and very unequal groups.

You have my sympathy, lilman.

But I think we're stuck with this stupid, stupid policy for a while.

"Don't Ask, Don't Tell" Could Be Around for A While

This is all the fault of the Massachusetts Democratic Party. They assumed that Ted Kennedy's constituents would always elect a Democrat, without paying attention to the very real virtues and experience that Ted Kennedy had personally.

They nominated a weak candidate, who then lost to former softcore porn boy Scott Brown.

Result: 59 seats in the Senate (too few to break a Rethuglican filibuster) instead of 60 (enough). And with the GOP relentlessly homophobic and completely without conscience, that kills any chance of repeal until at least 2013.

I'm so glad I'm leaving back for Singapore next week. American politics and watching my home country fall apart even under Democratic control sickens me.

We'll call you Brave Sir Robin. :D

Seriously, are you going to STOP watching and caring while you're in Singapore? Will you really stop paying attention to American politics? And is Singaporean politics really that much better? In what universe?

Thnx bro, see the problem is most of us in the military already feel as if its already gone with all the surveys and emails about how to deal with homos in the military and then this pops off..

I think its a generational thing, that prol wont get taken care of until i'm about ready to retire

What about all the people who have been discharged under DADT because the military command went on a witchhunt based on someone else's rumor outing the gay and lesbian servicemembers?

Yeah, that's the "Don't Ask" part, which isn't supposed to happen anymore.

We see how that worked out, huh?

But. What. Are. You. Going. To. Do. About. It?

DADT is government-sanctioned discrimination.

I hear talk of fighting it. But where is the action?

We're going to let Lady Gaga scream about it and leave it at that?

I've said it before and I'll say it again - we should be rioting in the streets over this.

But we're not. And we won't. We'll allow a handful of people in Washington decide when it's convenient to end this blatant form of discrimination.

Fucking. Weak.

I can't believe that the same country that gave us Stonewall can't mobilize to overturn DADT.

This is all the fault of the Massachusetts Democratic Party.

You are partially correct. It is the fault of the Democratic party and Obama.

The repeal of DADT was bundled with the DREAM act.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/DREAM_Act

Several Republican and Democratic who supported the repeal of DADT could not and will not support the DREAM act.

If the Democrats wanted the repeal of DADT, all they have to do is make it a standalone bill and it will past tomorrow.

The DREAM Act, along with a repeal of Don't Ask, Don't Tell, is incorporated into the 2010 National Defense Authorization Act.

The Democrats killed the repeal by their stupidity.

False. You seem to have a misunderstanding about how the process works.

If a new bill were introduced now it would not get out of committee before this Congress ends.

Sadly, I am not wrong.

The repeal of DADT and the DREAM act is incorporated into the 2011 National Defense Authorization Act.

The Democrats added both of these bills as amendments to the 2011 National Defense Authorization Act.

Just do a google search.

Here is the first news story that pop up:

http://latindispatch.com/2010/09/22...e-against-amendment-wedged-into-defense-bill/

The DREAM Act amendment, introduced by Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid (D-Nev.), was proposed as an attachment to the National Defense Authorization Act. The Senate voted 56-43 to stall the bill’s passage.

The bill also contained a clause repealing the “Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell” measure for gays in the military.

Congress could overturn DADT tomorrow if they wanted.

They control the committees and it could pass the committee tomorrow.

Sadly, I am not wrong.
Sadly, you are. On SO many levels.

The repeal of DADT and the DREAM act is incorporated into the 2010 National Defense Authorization Act.
1. The bill being debated is the 2011 National Defense Authorization Act. The 2010 act was passed last year.

2. The DREAM act has NOT been added to the bill. It was going to be proposed as an amendment to be added but before that could happen Republicans voted to block the bill from even coming up for debate on amendments.

The Democrats added both of these bills as amendments to the 2010 National Defense Authorization Act.

3. False. See #2. DADT has been added. DREAM has not.

Just do a google search.
Yeah, you really should.

It's rather interesting that this community seems to be just as divided as the current American government.

I think we are almost all on the same page here except for the select few that don't know what the hell they are talking about hahahaha
