Dear H & W posters,

I seem to have sore-like spots on the inside of my cheeks and under my tongue.

I caught a cold earlier this week, and have been consuming quite a lot of sour fruit.

What could be the matter?

Very. Yesterday.

Don't think it's an std since I've had similar painful spots in my mouth from time to time even before I became sexually active.

I'm inclined to think it's more of a canker sore.

Yeah, most likely a canker sore. For the record, I am not a doctor. Though, I did stay in a holiday inn express last night.

Find yourself some over-the-counter stuff to numb the pain. You may also want to increase your intake of b12, folic acid, and maybe iron. Think of what you've eaten in the past week or so. Have you eating anything you may not normally? Food allergies can cause the sores, as can stress.

Avoid spicy/acidic foods until healed. They should go away by themselves.

For me, I use the topical cream that dentists use to numb the gums before injections. But, it usually numbs other things. I also rinse with a chlorhexidine gluconate solution. A mild salt-water rinse should be good in lieu of the former.

If you have a cold, more than likely, they are canker sores;

If they don't go away, if they grow, and if they are white - see a doctor for more advice.

Ahh...the joys of canker sores.

They show up when I miss a spot when brushing my teeth. I used to use Anbesol (topical anesthetic), but now I just go for the more painful method--salt. Wet your finger, put a little salt on it, and then pack it onto the sore. It hurts like hell for a little while, and you'll drool a ton. But then it's painless. And then they're usually gone in less than a day.

Just checked my mouth. The sores themselves are gone but I can still see where they've been.

I still have a cold.
