Turnip greens, macaroni pie, she-crab soup, cooter soup, oyster fritters, fried hominy, okra pilau, asparagus casserole, corn pie, candied sweet potatoes, fried tomatoes, short'nin' bread, corn bread sticks, syllabub, iced pound cake, pecan pralines, watermellon rind pickle.....

Hey I live in Alabama! Soul Food is a tradition here in the Deep South. I don't care if you live in Atlanta, Nashville, Memphis, Birmingham, or Mobile, a lot of people go crazy over fried chicken and collard greens. Throw in some sweet potato casserole, pinto beans mixed with cornbread, your grandmother's pecan pie, and Kool-Aid.

If you want to plan for a weekend cookout, put a slab of ribs on a grill and throw on some hickory sauce. Have somebody who's been living in the south all of their life to make a southern potato salad (believe me it's the best), cole slaw, baked macaroni and cheese, and baked beans with hamburger meat. Oh and don't forget to make a pitcher of sweet tea (add loads of sugar and a bit of lemon juice.) Now that is what you call Southern Hospitality!

Hey Spears Fan, what's the chance of you coming up north and doing some cooking some weekend this summer?

I'm thinking your southern combined with my clam bake...yum!

Mmmmm....well since you live in Cape Cod I just have to take a flight out, how's that? I can smear some warm peach cobbler on your body and lick it off. Haha. I wish I can be that nasty but I'd rather pour chocolate on your bod than licking crust and peaches off of you. It would take many licks to gobble all of that up. Then it would be half of my caloric intake for the day.

Yall teasing me Spears Fan? I don't want to be getting all worked up for nothing...

Thank you everyone for the great ideas!

After consulting the replies on e-vite, I'm going to do something with cornbread; the jalapeño idea is one, the cracklin one sounds interesting (have to find a recipe for that one), and corn sticks could be fun, as in Grandma's kitchen I've found two brand new, never used, corn stick molds that have a date of 1939 on them. I tried to sell them in my rummage sale last month but no takers, so they are somewhere in a box in the garage.

If no one has said they're bringing deviled eggs to a southern cookout the police should show up because THAT IS A CRIME!! LOL.

No southern cookout (in some southern locals is called "dinner on the ground") is complete without deviled eggs, and they are one of the simplest things in the world to make. But you better make plenty (at least 4 per person) because they'll disappear like gold bars.

Corn bread is fine but frankly once it's transported it cools down and it's just not as good as good ol' hot cornbread slathered in butter.
