Speaker Boehner to fly commercial : Good Start!

The symbolism is fine.

Pelosi sometimes flew on military planes, you will recall, because Homeland Security felt her presence on commercial flights could make those flights terrorist targets. Of course, it's hard to imagine that there was ever any real risk. But Homeland Security wanted to make a symbolic gesture.

Boehner is continuing the Pelosi tradition of symbolic transportation gestures. (If Boehner really wanted to save money, he'd take a spare seat on a military flight from Washington to Wright Patterson Air Force Base in Dayton. That would land him even closer to his home in West Chester than the commercial airports in Dayton or Cincinnati could - and the military planes are going there anyway! But there are no cocktails or first class dinners on the military flights.)

I imagine we'll see a lot more of Boehner following in Pelosi's footsteps in coming months.

^ Plenty.

Most of Pelosi's transportation was accomplished on commercial flights. In order to use the military jet allocated to the speaker of the house, she had to reserve it ahead of time. Often, the jet was not available.

Watchdog groups complained that Pelosi used the plane more often than her predecessor, Dennis Hastert, but that was largely at the recommendation of Homeland Security during the Bush administration. Also, Pelosi lives in San Francisco. Hastert was from Illinois and Boehner is from Ohio. Boehner could drive his car home to West Chester from Washington in 10 to 12 hours if he really wanted to save money - or take a train!

This gesture by Boehner means hardly anything. Of course, he will still use the speaker's military jet when it is appropriate/necessary. And, of course, he will still fly commercial as well.

Same as Pelosi.

feel free to ask the president the same way ;)

why?

you republicans are the ones obstructing his agenda and ability to do so

you wanted the shot?

well you got it.

Deliver or show yourselves to be the empty rhetoric party of NONONONO

Hmmm Me thinks i will echo the request of a young Mr. Pirate first name Boston:

"You have some proof?"

The politics of sound bites appears to be alive and well.

Of note Mr. Boehner is from my backyard (as a child). We all dont cry as much though.

So Boner "says" he will fly commercial? A) Big Fucking Deal and B) I say a few weeks among the average American will send his Koch Heart of Coal back to the loving arms of the seat in a private plane. By the way, looking good Johnny Boy!

But Pelosi aides say that she has used a military aircraft less than her predecessor, Republican Speaker J. Dennis Hastert of Illinois. An aide said Pelosi often flies commercial, including travel for political activities such as campaign fundraising. In 2009, she used military aircraft for 38 flights to and from her San Francisco district. She used commercial airlines for 71 flights throughout the country, according to her office.

Right and she said when she took up the desire to fly military that she would only use it for the long flight to her home district.

So how is that earth shattering. It is a politicl sound bite that plays well for those who do no thinking and simply listen to MSNBC, CNN or FOX.

Thanks for the link though.

LMAO!!! Notice the operative word is that he "intends" to. I bet you $20 that he'll pull the shit stick in a few months, and say, "I wanted to but Secret Service demanded I needed private jets for security sake".

Watch, ya know that's the way it'll go down.

This is exactly what I was thinking while reading the OP.

I hope that someone will be able to nail him the first time that a private plane or helicopter makes sure he gets home for some party fundraiser and then back again in time for an 'important' vote.

Because we all know it is gonna happen.

Oh.

And by the way.

I intend to walk everywhere and donate all the money I'll save to the poor in the US.

Unless it rains.

Or it is too hot/cold.

Or I need to get groceries.

Or go to a movie.

But really.

As long as I am doing something symbolic, that makes it great, doesn't it?

Not all doubletalk; there have been some solid accomplishments, but not much said about them. Maybe in his professor's view of things, the accomplishments were supposed to speak for themselves. But nothing much speaks at all these days unless it get sent by email or twitter.

It would be nice if Wall St bankers did the same. Don't think so somehow. After all, they're still masters of the universe.

Now, where are the other 3 trillion dollars in cuts coming from?

Cutting stimulus that is wasted funds, getting cash back from newly republican governorships who havent spent it, cutting military spending in some very small ways but still that is a leap for the R's, demonstrating that Health care cost too much to bear at this time....

I have no doubt the house that forms will cut a ton of shit that the left will convulse over and you know what? Obama will get in line and be in the precarious position of convincing Senate liberals to get on the bus.

Ok cool.

Now about the other 2.6 Trillion?

What you're suggesting is just a drop in the bucket.

How about letting the tax cuts for the rich expire? Because that would pretty much fill in that gap and we wouldn't have to cut school lunches for sick kids or medicaid for the homeless.

The kids are fat and i believed Darwin.

Cut it all and raise the taxes on those income levels at the tippy top....

It was interesting on the associated "fix it yourself " thread.... the single solitary massive change you can make is to Cap Medicare at GDP or in other words spend on healthcare what you can afford.......
