Spidey Shatters Records With $148M

Spider-Man caught just about everyone in his web. The super hero's latest adventure, "Spider-Man 3," smashed box-office records with a $148 million haul in its first three days, according to studio estimates Sunday.

Amazing...

Wow, three more weekends like that, and they'll break even. :)

Lex
Worldwide cume stands at $375 million.

With a production budget of $258 million plus all the marketing put into the movie, I think it's about even. :p

I think most studios include marketing within the production budget(especially for franchises like this one). Of course I'm sure they had to spend some additional cash that wasn't in the budget for marketing.

Nevertheless they will break even :D

I just read it from here:

With an official production cost of $258M (and some speculate that it is actually higher), Spider-Man 3 stands as the most expensive movie yet to hit theaters. But despite the enormous pricetag, and not to mention the extravagant marketing tab, the super sequel stands a chance of approaching $1 billion in global box office this summer with tons more cash coming from video, television, and merchandising. So the eye-popping budget almost seems justified.
It made it seem like the two were separate, but I'm not sure.

I'm not too surprised. I only wish it was a better film than it turned out to be.

That is confusing LOL

But consider this though.. Studios like to plan ahead for the marketing portion of the movie.. so they can work with the producers, and etc to get adequate coverage shots for various niche markets, also making sure they have quality images and stories for their marketing materials, and have adequate time to distribute the promotional energy throughout the worldwide market. That's just some of it.. I'm sure there is ALOT more that has to be covered. Lets also remember marketing isn't just the "commercials" :D

I think a huge portion of the budget has to be allocated for marketing and distribution to get the project out worldwide.

Don't forget it broke the single day sales gross on Friday with $59 mil.

About the budget, the studio (Columbia) is the one saying it cost them $258 mil, but most everyone else is thinking it's upwards of $350 mil, including advertising and marketing. Either way, they could have spent $500 mil and knew they'd get their money back.

havent seen it yet hopefully this upcoming weekend will be the time.

I saw it and it was amazing! Worth every penny of the reported $250-350 million it cost to make.

It also broke the record for number of screens for its debut at over 4,200.

hmmm, they've done it the last two times to. its expected.

Most production companies figure a marketing budget equal to 2.5x the budget of the movie (so a $258M budget implies a $645M marketing budget).

Of course, keep in mind that includes merchandising campaigns (anything from toys to Happy Meals), so a lot of that budget will make itself up, but still...

According to Entertainment Weekly, the actual WORLDWIDE cost is 800 million. And there is a fear of rapid drop off in grosses because the reviews were lukewarm and the cinema score average by people who've seen it is relatively low (B+) for a blockbuster. It actually may only wind up breaking even or making a small profit.

not bad, not bad at all. I wonder how Pirates will do?

Thats crazy numbers & I'm not surprised; and maybe its me but it seems like I've seen less TV spots & advertisements for #3 compared to Spider-Man 2 (which I felt like I saw every 5 minutes)...anybody else?

But go Spidey!

... and 'The Condemned' fell to #11 in it's 2nd week. I might actually like that in a sick way, though -- I kinda like the fact that it'll be more of a cult movie. Definitely a SOLID drinking moving with buds when it comes out, as far as I'm concerned.

I'm happy the movie did well, but 4 is a tad excessive...Especially if Tobey isn't Peter Parker...I just hope it doesn't turn into a new millennium version of "Batman & Robin"; but with 4 sequels? I don't know...lol

(even then I'm not sure why he wouldn't want to do them, he's pretty much sealed his fate as being known only as Spider-Man for the rest of his career regardless)
