Splitting Migraine. Shoot me now.

Ugh.

I made it through until the end of the day, got the project fired out the door and then came home, got the proper meds and went to bed for the next 12 hours. I did try the accupressure and even if it was only a placebo effect from the distraction...it helped get me through to the end of the day with some relief.

I have a migraine hangover today, but the pain is gone for now. At this time of the year, my sister and I are prone to getting headaches that can last for as long as a week...but usually I can get out ahead and manage them before they are full blown.

In addition to eating something sweet, when I went to bed in a blacked out room, I tie a silk band of cloth around my forehead as tight as I can. This added pain is what finally blocks out the headache and after about an hour....I can release the pressure.

I will remember to pick up some exedrin Migraine for the office medicine cabinet today though......

I appreciate the tips.

You might want to keep a headache journal to track when these headaches are occurring- it helps pinpoint things that may be triggering the headache. Having headaches that last for days at a time points to a seasonal cause- changes in weather or seasonal allergies can be a migraine trigger. Also, a headache that goes on for days is more likely to be a cluster headache which has a different set of treatment options.

I actually started with migraines when I was about 8 years old....they run in one side of our family.

I actually do have a pretty good profile of all my triggers...including allergies and weather and can manage them about 95% of the time before they become debilitating.

So for anyone who also suffers....it is possible to avoid them by knowing more about yourself and not inviting a headache through diet or any other known triggers.

The problem with yesterday was a rapid fluctuation in pressure combined with having chocolate the night before and a short night's sleep....and running out of proper meds at the office....and no time to go home to get them. The perfect storm.

Sinus headaches can be a precursor of a migraine for me, which is why I usually can get out ahead by taking the right meds early.

Oh, and by the way for those who have recently expressed concern about the alcohol content in my bloodstream......I actually won't drink any wine, beer or liquor for at least a week if I have a headache episode. Alcohol, particularly wine and grain spirits are a direct line to a migraine for me.

So my slide into skid row is delayed, I'm afraid.

Oh! I forgot to mention, you should stop chugging bottles of vodka every other hour. Try that for a week and see if the headaches lessen.

If you are experiencing a migraine attack, you should be sensitive to light and/or sound, and nausea is common. You should get a referral to a neurologist who can assess you and prescribe medications that will treat the cause rather than just the pain symptoms. Soome pain meds if taken too frequently for migraine can have a paradoxical effect, resulting in Medication Overuse Headache. There are several medications approved for headache prophylaxis, or prevention, in addition to the acute meds. If you are experiencing frequent headaches of long duration, you really should see a neurologist for a definitive diagnosis and appropriate, effective treatment. Just sayin.

I think the trigger may have been not having my usual bucket of potato juice before and after dinner the night before last.....I ate some 80% chocolate with sea salt instead. Incidentally...chocolate is one of my cravings before a head burst, but I have gotten away with it for a few years without needing to take a handi-drill to my temples after.

I actually got a killer one yesterday afternoon, too. It was very hot and very bright, and glare off every surface outside tends to give me one on really hot/bright days. Or maybe just the heat and humidity does it and I associate it with the glare when I start to get sensitive to it. Not sure.

Those are the pretty common triggers. The only 3 you're missing are aspartame, aged cheese and sex... pretty much anything fun and decadent seems to cause migraines. :(

Careful... you'll have PatGrimshaw in here blaming some religion if he reads that. ;)

^ Well then...aren't I fortunate that I am neither religious nor an alcoholic.

And of course when it comes to stupid people.

Fortunately I eat no aspartame...but alas...aged cheese....another of my triggers and something I always crave before a migraine.

Sex has never been a trigger though, although for a another friend...it is.

sigh.

^ But you a Lapsed Catholic.

I don't know what your issue is with Catholics, but if I am a lapsed Catholic...then it only follows that I am not religious and ergo...using the spotty logic you have cited....am not in any need of escaping from reality.

Now, on the other hand....if I was saddled with the vast, dull, existentially, intellectually and emotionally bankrupt reality that you seem to inhabit....I'd be consuming a veritable pharmacological cornucopia of reality altering meds.... and probably drinking Absinthe right from a bottle from the moment I opened my eyes in the morning and realized that the only thing about this day to distinguish it from all the days before.... and all the days to come in my life, is that it is just one more before death.

I could tell you were a Lapsed Catholic right from the beginning.

Way back when I first arrived I identified you as being the star of this show

Well....like everything else you obsess over and rattle on about ad nauseam on this forum...you are dead wrong.

As I've noted in another thread...both sides of my family have been as protestant as they come since the reformation.

BTW. I guess you're still a little miffed that your stalker thread got slammed shut yesterday?

Absinthe is definitely the best way to cope with a compound Grimshaw headache, though it may not distance you far enough out of reality to help. You might want to combine it with other hallucinogens. Then you'll see a dung beetle stop what it's doing as it's about to start rolling a big pile of shit and look sheepish when you see it, and it will shrug and say in a faux Australian accent "The Muslims did it."
