I'm in Stamford, Connecticut. They held their St. Patrick's Day parade today. I watched.

It was a celebration of the whole community. Yes, cute guys in kilts. I'm all for that. But Irish dance schools were with Polish and Peruvian dance schools. I'd forgotten the glorious noise of an elementary school band. They had several, and lots of bagpipes and fife and drum corps. Youth groups galore, from cheerleading to softball to hockey.

In other places and other times, gays and lesbians were not permitted to march in some St. Patrick's Day parades. This one had marchers from Stamford Pride with rainbow flags.

It was a pleasant hour. I like community.

Maybe they were picking a day when the streets were safe from DUIs, which may not be the case two Fridays from now.

The kids.

But I wondered the same thing. I don't get holidays that keep getting scheduled for convenience. And churches are some of the worst about it.

Still, I'm glad you had a good parade. Connecticut is a very progressive state, so not too surprised this one was so gay friendly.

Ya do have to wonder how anyone who's celebrating gingerdom could find gays repulsive.

And I'm going to another. Cleveland's parade is today. It's gray and drizzly out, alas. But downtown buses have been detoured all day and everything's ready.

I can't explain why their parade is so early but people eating cabbage for 2 weeks can't be good. Towns and cities will be destroyed.

And rivers will run green.

It is why we have reserved our big St. Patrick's dinner for today...we will be at home on our own this weekend.

And rivers will run green.

Savannah has a big St. Patrick's Day parade, and at one point back in the day they tried to dye the Savannah River green. It just carries too much silt; the green would not take and the water remained resolutely brown.

Every photo I've ever seen looks like a chemical spill.

I understand that it's the same dye they use to colour antifreeze. That along with all the plastic garbage on river banks is not a pretty sight.

Ew.

The Chicago River runs green every year.

Anyhow...I went to Cleveland's parade this afternoon.

It was cloudy and chilly but at least no rain.

The impression I got was that this was much more an Irish celebration, not the all-community event Stamford projected.

Cleveland had a MUCH larger law enforcement presence, more church presence, even a "right to life" organization. More politicians and labor unions. Fewer youth sports groups.

High school bands, not the grade school bands I heard in Stamford.

No obvious LGBT presence, but a small group wearing rainbow socks and strutting.

There was a good crowd, good spirits.

Fewer cute guys in kilts. The Yonkers Fire Pipe and Drum had more of them than the whole Cleveland parade.

Although it's late, Happy St. Patrick's Day.
