Starting my 4th course of Accutane

Ive been taking 150mg of Doryx (doxycycline) daily for the last 5 months with only slight improvement, about 15-30%.

My doctor immediately recommended I start accutane again for the larger flare ups im getting. My skin is pretty clear on my face, but worsening over time elsewhere.

This is my 4th course of accutane, my first being in high school. I will have to get my blood tested every month.

I will be on it for 7 months :(, and have to wait about 3-6 weeks to see improvement.

After treatment, im expecting a 50-60% improvement.
 
Acutane can give excellent results for acne when other meds have failed. A friend took three courses of it and a year after the last treatment had numbness in arms and hands and a lot of weight gain. His hands became almost rock hard. Bloodwork indicated all sorts of problems. It was diagnosed to be caused by a destroyed thyroid gland. Apparently this is one of the side effects some have had from acutane. Surprisingly, it is still on the market. Read the BOOK of side effects and warnings that come with Acutane. I hope you do not have any of the reactions. Have you tried giving up milk products for a few months? That is a rather simple thing that has worked for some bad acne cases. Do some extensive research online. Acutane is a very dangerous and powerful substance that needs more research and attention. Good luck!
 
5 months on doxy antibiotic for acne is unnecessarily long in my opinion, it only serves as short term relief and your body builds resistance to it. This site has tons of personal logs and info from people that are on Accutane too. Be very cautious with Accutane and long term exposure. http://www.acne.org/messageboard/tags/forums/accutane/

do you remember which brand he was taking or the dosage? the only thing i got was sore joints on accutane, also been on sotret and amnesteem. and yeah i could use all kinds of products for the rest of my life but its way too expensive, insurance doesn't cover over the counter treatments. i believe it when dermatologists say they cant treat acne without it, even if its a flawed chemical.

dairy is something i know i have to cut out completely, i dont drink milk nearly as much anymore, switching to soy.

i dont just have acne i get inflammatory spots on my skin that only seem to respond to radiation in the past. theres really no stronger antibiotic that ive found than radiation since it can penetrate the skin. the doryx is to control the inflammation but its only slightly effective and there are long term risks. i think i have to radically change my diet too since pills and topical medications are simply not effective. the weather may play a role with my skin too as its usually cold and wet and dark here, not so good for my skin type.
 
update: done with a month of accutane; its helping with the acne but my spots are getting worse so im going to try and get radiation therapy, its the only thing i have not tried yet.
 
What's the clinical diagnosis of the spots? This really has me scratching my head.

I can't think of any condition like that in which radiation (what type?) is therapeutic.

Ever tried a potent topical anti-fungal like terbinafine?
