Stereotypes are often the only way some directors and actors think the audience will 'get' the characters. And it doesn't always have to be gays or blacks. I have yet to see an American sitcom which can 'do' Canadian without all the stereotypes, and they do them very, very badly. Even though they are probably the only way the American audience will know the characters are Canadian, they are usually the funniest part of the programme to us for all the wrong reasons.

The heterosexists may be making or paying the studios to keep the phony image of a limp-wrist-long-nails fem-bottom in the face of the public to help fuel the anti-gay marriage bigots and other heterosexist and religionist agendas.

I liked the old All In The Family episode where Steve the big butch ex football player was the gay man and Roger the poof was straight.

Stereotypes were used long before the gay marriage issue even became a hint of an issue.

A classic example is "Lost in Space" with the queeny, weak, gullible -stupid,cowardly, greedy, self-centered Doctor Smith. Who was detested by the more masculine males, recognized even by aliens the universe over as a easy mark. Doc Smiths best relationship on the show was with the young son of the Robinson's and a machine with no shortage of scripts where he fucked them up every chance he could to better his own situation. The point promoted was the man had few if any redeeming qualities was lazy and couldn't be trusted.

Did you ever see the pilot? Smith was a straight-laced, by-the-book military man without a funny bone in his body. He was mean and malicious and he ended up on the flight by screwing up. (I forget how. It's been a long time since I've seen it.)

However, when the show was picked up, he knew his character would be the first one to be eaten by aliens (or murdered by the Robinsons). He 'camped it up on his own volition to get the audience to like him and to ensure Smith's survival on the show.

By Jonathan Harris' own admission, Smith wasn't gay and was never intentionally played to be gay. His relationship with Will was based upon the fact that Will was the only castaway who could tolerate him to any extent and offered him any true friendship.

I also don't like the way how gays are portrayed. In this topic mentioned earlier; It's the same for blacks, blonds, etc. It's how tv/movies work and I have to be honest... I have to laugh about it to sometimes.

I feel many stereotypes hold truth to them and the homosexual one is no exception.

Though I'm annoyed by lisp talking, scrawny gay men I am well aware that I may in fact be no different as well.
