Steve Paul Jobs 1955 - 2011

The world lost a great man. He was a genius who changed technology.

RIP Steve.

Man on man I've bought a lot of his products!

I see I was one upped by HT. Guess I shoulda looked there first. This is much more a cold hard news event than a hot topic. <sigh>

Although in the end we are all guaranteed only two things.

Death and taxes.

I wonder if it was a fortune telling response to have the iPhone 4s announcement fall to deaf ears in the world and then he died. Will Apple lose it's ground breaking creativity without it's leader? Did he leave a trained legacy to carry on?

We shall see.

I wonder if he is modernizing the wings and clouds up in heaven?

Let put it this way. He was a great man but no man is bigger than a company.
So creativity is depends on a collection of people like engineers, designers ... etc.

The old genius dies and the new geniuses will pop up.

Oh I believe the team is positively necessary but the leadership is what is key. One type will make the wrong choice at the wrong time. SJ had a knack for knowing the right choice to make and when to do it. That will be hard to replace. Very few people on earth have the innate ability to understand completely what the people around them want. Steve Jobs was one of those people. DO not doubt that Apple will struggle with finding itself after SJ departs the scene. There is a reason through his troubled health issues that he stayed with Apple in such a demanding capacity. There is no protege' to take his place methinks. I cant know for sure because I am making some assumptions. But we shall all see in five years where isomethingoranother is at.

Jobs was a great man. Very smart and very forward-looking. What made him a great leader was that he wouldn't accept anything except perfection, and pushed his team to meet those expectations.

I think there are several people at Apple that can fill his shoes in terms of leadership, but not personality. Jonathan Ive (designer of all of Apple's recent products) and Tim Cook can do it, since both were an integral part of Apple's rise to where it is.

But all that doesn't matter right now. Now's the time to relish what Steve did, and reflect on where we'd be without him or Apple. Probably the most touching thing out of all of this is that, even if there were people or other executives that hated Apple, or competed with them fiercely, they're all praising Jobs for how his ideas moved the industry forwards, and how he changed forever how people interacted with technology.

RIP Steve.

Default Re: Ten Brands That Will Disappear in 2012

Im surprised Apple is not on this list, I don't see them going anywhere. Ok maybe they are not "near death" but they have a long way to fall at this point. Their product lineup right now is pretty lame, they totally screwed up the new nano and the iPad is a $700 paperweight.

The same thing goes for blu-ray, dics sales are down and people are buying blu-ray players just for the steaming video services. Blu-Ray is just another one of Sony's recent failures.

Back to Apple, the iPod and iPad are pop-culture fads that will quickly die off. Does anyone really believe Apple will be as "successful" in a few months, let alone a few years from now?

Apple died with him.

You're full of it. (and so is your previous post)

Apple's products right now are selling faster than they ever have before. The company is expected to move 13 million or more iPads next quarter, tens of millions of iPhones, tens of millions of iPod touches, and tens of millions of macs. Their profit for last quarter alone was $7.3 billion dollars, and they have over $70 billion in cash in the bank. Only the ignorant would say that Apple died with him.

(And their stock price bears this out. Some were predicting a catastrophic drop, and yet it has only dropped less than a percent today)

Do you really need to make comments like this?

Can you get your point across without insults and name calling?[-X

I'm surprised that the death of Steve Jobs has saddened me so much. Love or hate Apple stuff, it's undeniable that Jobs was the guide behind a company that people loved, sometimes even worshipped. His guidance helped build one of the most successful technology companies in history. The passion that Apple discussions can inflame are a testament to Apple's influence. People don't argue and debate over things that don't matter to them.

Personally, Apple products are part of every day for me. My work involves Apple hardware and software, and I use Apple tools for entertainment and to communicate with my friends and family. I hadn't considered just how intrinsic Apple stuff is in my life until today.

Like many of us, I have lost friends to cancer. Everybody who knew Jobs says that he was a devoted father and husband, and it is for his wife and family that I am most saddened.

Made me smile:

I disagreed strongly with Steve Jobs' politics, but he was an amazing man who helped changed Americans' lives for the better, and showed that when American entrepreneurs are given less regulation and a pro-capitalist political environment, they thrive.

Apple created thousands of jobs in California's Bay Area and never used any federal stimulus money.

Steve Jobs was a great American who changed our lives for the better.

Well done, Sir!

Apple died with him.

People have been saying Apple died since the 80's.

Try to be a little positive.

Apple has changed the computer industry, cell phone industry, and the music industry.

Once you thought there was going to be nothing new ... they came up with something new, exciting, and creative.

Apple is not only Steve Jobs ... there are thousands of talented people at Apple who have made incredible accomplishments.

We need more creative business leaders like Steve Jobs. Ones that take risks, ones that dream of what others see as being impossible.

I disagreed strongly with Steve Jobs' politics,

What politics? Apple stands out as one of the few major corporations that avoids political involvement. They are the only US company of their size who don't have a political action committee.

I'm not aware of Jobs ever making any particularly strong statements regarding politics or personal ideology. I'd be interested to read them if you know of any.

The only political action I recall coming from Apple was a $100K donation to the California "No On Prop 8" campaign. Apple has a strong history of supporting same-sex partner rights, and was one of the first US companies to offer equal benefits to all employees with same sex partners.

…we strongly believe that a person’s fundamental rights — including the right to marry — should not be affected by their sexual orientation. Apple views this as a civil rights issue, rather than just a political issue, and is therefore speaking out publicly against Proposition 8.

Apple's new CEO Tim Cook is often referred to as "The most powerful gay man in America".

And here's Apple employees contributing to the It Gets Better Project:

^ That's what JQ is objecting to - Apple's support for gay rights.

It's an anti-Republican position.

Give it a break people.

Apple products crossed ideology.

Obama uses Apple products, Limbaugh uses Apple products.

Give some respect to the guy who just died.

Steve Jobs was the great innovator of our time. Not only with Apple, but with Pixar. He redefined how we use technology today. We are a generation of people who grew up on beautiful stories like Toy Story, Wall-E, and Up. No matter what smart phone you use today, it was in some way inspired by Steve's iPhone. That collection of music you have and what device you play it on, is most likely related to iTunes and the iPod. We have lost our Edison. The truly tragic moment of this death, is how we've lost a generation of technology. That next, big idea. Apple will carry on, hopefully continuing to innovate in his spirit. However, life for all of us won't be the same without Steve Jobs.
