Stop Online Piracy Act

Re: Congress is about to censor the Internet.

Oh please.

the only sites that need to worry are sites that deal in pirated content.

WRONG.

ANY WEBSITE with ONE infringement.. doesn't matter WHAT type of site it is, will be SHUT DOWN.

All the popular sites that you know of will just be the tip of the iceberg. This will not only affect torrent websites etc, but ALL websites.

Re: Congress is about to censor the Internet.

the only sites that need to worry are sites that deal in pirated content. BlogSpot has thumbed their noses at movie and music producers and let pirate bloggers post links to their content, File Sharing services openly allow people to make money off the content they link to.

Sites like ItsAllGay have made millions of dollars by charging people to see content they didn't produce. Nobody has given a shit and every time anyone in the industry has tried to stand up to it, people have shouted them down.

I know that when I've posted negative stuff about piracy, many people here have told me I'm stupid for thinking the industry would ever be able to stop piracy and we shouldn't try.

Well, since the public were so happy to keep downloading content they didn't pay for... this is where we have gone. I don't think we'll have to worry about free speech being stopped. Unless your idea of free speech is "come to my blog and download pirated files."

I forgot to mention one thing..

What people don't get about this bill is that it's not essentially only about piracy. I am against piracy like everyone else, but I'm still against this bill. WHY? Because it violates human rights and free speech. I am against people being surveillanced when it's not necessary. I also think they can find a BETTER way to get rid of piracy. This bill was ridiculous to begin with. There's other and better ways to deal with piracy without breaching freedom of speech. This bill takes it too far.

Correct me if I am wrong but my feeling about JUB is that we will be safe due of course to the smart choice by the good people who run this site never allowing pirated or Copyrighted material. A wise policy that may now save us from this action.

Yes, but if ONE poster posts something they're not allowed to.. one pic is often enough, then the site would be shut down if the mods of this site is not fast enough to remove it.

I agree with what someone above me said.. it's wrong to punish innocent third parties. It's impossible for websites to monitor everything its users are doing. I am sure most people agree that piracy is a crime, and don't want it on their websites. Many people do their best to remove something if it's out of line or considered piracy. But how the hell is a website with millions of users going to monitor every action their members do? it's insane, and simply not possible. This whole bill is so fucking insane.. I don't even get why they debated it in the first place. Like WTF?!?!

Like I said.. this is not only about piracy, but also about free speech. This bill is violating free speech and will ruin the internet. Millions, hell, probably billions of dollars will be lost only so a few motion picture companies in USA can protect their stuff.

I am against piracy, but I believe there's better ways to deal with it than this bill. Punish the one doing it, not an innocent third party website.

Let's take a moment to clarify this before some poor soul shits himself!

This bill would only affect "ANY WEBSITE with ONE infringement.. doesn't matter WHAT type of site it is, will be SHUT DOWN" that is hosted by a US based company and/or inside the borders and/or territories of the US. If it's hosted anywhere else the US can go fuck itself!
I mean really!! Don't they have more pressing issues to deal with?!

Now onto the clarification:

"ANY WEBSITE with ONE infringement.. doesn't matter WHAT type of site it is, will be SHUT DOWN" means that if you post a video of yourself masturbating to a gay tube site and your video just happens to have Mama Mia playing in the background blaring over an episode of Tommy Got Fingered, this is what could legally happen:
1. You could get sued by both the music industry and film industry.
2. The gay tube site that you published your video could get sued by both the music industry and film industry..
3. Your internet provider could get sued by both the music industry and film industry for providing the bandwidth that enabled you to upload your video.

Re: Congress is about to censor the Internet.

The more I read about this law the more it seems like burning down a Ouse to stop a fire.

Way over-reaching and way too vague. The intended purpose is great but it's going to have to seriously be changed before the Internet becomes like tv... One way entertainment and not interactive.

I've been debating this on other sites, didn't even notice that it wasn't on JUB. Thanks Corny for point that out.

Information on SOPA:
Stop Online Piracy Act: A Primer

The idea behind SOPA sounds reasonable. It came about in order to try to snuff out piracy online, as the entertainment industry is obviously not excited about the many people downloading their product without their permission. The issue is, however, that it doesn't really matter whether you're in support of piracy, against it, or just don't care. SOPA makes it possible for companies to block the domain names of web sites that are simple capable of, or seem to encourage copyright infringement.

This means that if Lifehacker happened to have an article or two that could be interpreted as piracy-friendly, our domain could be blocked so it's unaccessible by visiting lifehacker.com. What the bill can't do is block numeric IP addresses, so you could still access Lifehacker, or any other site that could be censored, if you knew that address. This is important because it means this bill can't do much to stop downloaders of pirated content...
http://lifehacker.com/5860205/all-about-sopa-the-bill-thats-going-to-cripple-your-internet

Obviously media firms love this bill. It allows them to snuff out piracy online, no matter what site it is. Internet firms, and people who understand technology hate this with a passion. Half of Silicon Valley would have to dissapear and media outlets would renegotiate their deals with companies like Apple or Netflix which offer music and streaming video online for cheap and easy prices. Few know this, but media firms hate both Apple and Netflix, but truly only work with them because they offer a open into a market that will replace (and already has) the old market they are used to. Suddenly a song could cost $5 instead of $.99 and if Apple thought this wasn't kosher (which it wouldn't be) and said no, Universal Music Group for example could pull it's catalog from Apple at the end of their contract and essentially say a big fuck you to consumers.

Essentially a website can get reported for containing copyright violations. It can be reported by anyone. Then the site can be blacklisted and forced to shut down. A big concern is that sites that are largely above board and fit the spirit of the law, will get summarily shut down because user posted content could violate the law and reactions to such content would be deemed not enough to satisfy the law by anyone who investigates the report. It’s also pretty common in government for red tape to slow up the process. So sites can be quickly shut down for violations not of their own making. The site owner could police the action but still be found in violation. Or an error could be made. And the site is still shut down caught up in a slow process to clear the site’s name and get it reactivated.

...Since the law includes search engines and payment network providers as well as site owners, the effects of a site being shut down can be sweeping, killing business from e-commerce sales, ruining page ranking, Search Engine Optimization, and basic search engine functionality.

As has been mentioned, this will only hurt legitimate companies operating, it wont stop piracy. Especially with how computer savvy people are today. People have already begun compiling lists of IP's should the law happen.

Whenever a new technology comes out, big media has always hated and accused it of detroying their business. This happened with VHS, the CD, the vinyl record player, DVD's etc. The internet is now the target. I am not for piracy at all, but one of the great things about being able to liscense someone elses music or video, is it creates all this wonderful new content, innovation and creation that inspires bigger and better things. Allow SOPA as it is right now to go through, and kiss another thing America was good at out the door and over to Europe and Asia while we sit back and just watch.

DEBATE!!!

Mandated court-ordered DNS filtering will also have potentially catastrophic consequences for DNS stability and security. It will subvert efforts currently underway -- and strongly supported by the U.S. government -- to build more robust security protections into the DNS protocols.

...As serious as these infirmities are, SOPA -- the House's bill -- builds upon them, enlarges them, and makes them worse. Under SOPA, IP rights holders can proceed vigilante-style against allegedly offending sites, forcing credit card companies to stop dealing with websites without any court hearing.

This bill will become law - I don't see any way around it. I certainly hope the judicial branch sees the unconstitutionality of it.

It's already been delayed because of serious backlash and pushback. I hope they re-write the bill and fix the serious problems with it.

I'm a bit confused now. Will this apply only to American websites or will it apply to American surfers?
It would only block the website in America. So say if they took down Facebook, it would only effect facebook in America, and Canada would still be able to see it without restriction.

The internet is region and country based. This would only hurt Americans.
