The only time I see guys regularly in their underwear is in my gym's locker room. From what I have seen, definately different styles of boxer briefs are most common amongst all ages, with several guys wearing more form fitting trunks. I have only seen one guy at the gym wear a jock. And only recently noticed one of the regulars wearing a thong. This surprised me because he is an older, married straight guy in his 50's, although he has a killer body that would put most 19 yr olds to shame.

When I was in jr high school, jocks were required during PE. As a matter of fact, to make sure all the boys were wearing them, we had regular jock strap inspections! (I am not making this up). We would be lined up in alphabetical order and the coach would walk past us, and we would have to roll down the waist of our shorts and show him our jock. It seemed perfectly normal at the time. And no, he wasn't some pervert wanting to see some young male flesh. He was a very strict ex-marine and an excellent coach. Of all the teachers I ever had, he stands out for being one of the best.

Even though it was a public school, it was run on very strict lines. The summer before students entered 7th grade, the parents were mailed a booklet outlining all the rules. The section which covered PE listed a dress code of green shorts, reversible green/white top, white athletic socks, white athletic shoes, and a jock strap. It specified exactly what brand to buy and to buy them at J.C. Penney's. At the beginning of the school year, the coach lectured us on the importance of always wearing a jock during sports. He had us so scared that our balls would fall off if we didn't! This was in the late 1970's, so there was not the variety of underwear or athletic clothing available today. It was either boxer shorts or briefs, and jocks for sports.

I still don't see how they're better than briefs - they're basically ass-less briefs, right?

You'd think if they were THAT useful, the rest of the world would have caught on. But they haven't. I've only seen one jockstrap in the flesh, and that's a pair co-owned by two friends of mine which only makes its appearance at parties, usually when everyone's plastered and it is being complemented with a viking helmet.
